#3: A complete lack of situational awareness does that. Do not move faster than you can think. Obviously, this SWK (stupid white kid) should move at a snails pace ... before he ends up in a wheelchair.
#1- Situational Awareness. It's NOT just a concept, it a way of life. #3- Snowflake. Bought that shit lock, stock, and barrel. Don't be a douche. #5- Just flat out impressive. Can't free climb worth a shit myself. Kinda jealous. #8- Doesn't swallow. Messgae received. #9- I hope that's the babysitter. I'd split it and quit it.
#3-always wondered how often that happened on 101 in Silicon Valley with the motorcyclists who would weave their way in between backed up traffic. Like on a Friday evening on a hot summer day when no one has any patience-open the door at just the right time and the rider's going down. Best to do that with a rental car though.
Having done it for decades, I can attest that lane splitting virtually never results in anything bad happening. Only once did a driver open their door on me. I was quick enough to avoid hitting him, though my buddy who was riding behind me was ready to break the idiot's skull. I have also used lane splitting to keep cars from ramming me from behind. Head on a swivel and all that; drivers have it in for motorcycle riders!
If everyone is doing what they're supposed to do (watching differentials speed, staying aware, not doing the unexpected) nothing bad happens. A driver opening their door on or swerving toward a motorcycle rider splitting lanes and intentionally causing an accident is the unexpected. It's a bad idea for a lot of reasons.
* If the driver is lucky, opening their door to impede a motorcycle rider splitting lanes will only result in a jammed door that won't close and requires a trip to the body shop. Doesn't take much of an impact to mess up a door and the hinge.
* It's not illegal to split lanes in CA, and riders do carry a level of responsibility for bad outcomes. But it's definitely illegal to use your vehicle as a weapon, so a driver who does it risks being found at fault or even going to jail for assault & battery, criminal negligence, etc.
* In the latter instance, the driver will probably be paying out of pocket for damages to the rider and his bike since most insurance policies don't cover criminal acts.
* Depending on the parties involved, there's also the possibility the rider will beat the driver into oblivion for being an asshole.
BTW, on hot days, as you described, with an air-cooled motorcycle, it's split lanes or risk overheating the engine. I never owned a water-cooled bike so can't speak to that.
#3, the woman sitting there looked like she's seen this before
