Airport District, Modesto California: It's a neighborhood just outside the city limits of Modesto that was started in the 1930s when the good people of Modesto refused to allow Dust Bowlers to settle in town, so the Okies decided to build their own damned neighborhood, and build it they did. The houses there look just like what you'd expect to see in Oklahoma farm country back in the early 1900s. No two houses look alike.
When I was a kid growing up there in the 1960s and 70s, it was still mostly Okies living there, a poor neighborhood but filled with working people. My grandparents settled there in the 50s and while they moved out occasionally for work, they always moved back mainly because they were comfortable among their own kind.
In the late 70s and 80s, the Okies moved out and the illegals moved in, bringing in some serious gang problems with them. Now it rivals South Modesto as one of the most crime and drug filled areas in the county.
