Playing leap frog with NASA, NASA is still losing. You'd think the deep pocketed funded by us space program would be the clear winner and yet, in spite of this video, it is not.
NASA is on a winning streak. For some definitions of winning:
"Sadly, the visionary goal of getting Americans to Mars first came crashing down when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) which, under the Trump administration had allowed for SpaceX to conduct their important test flights, ordered Mr. Musk to cancel the Starship prototype test.
. . . "Despite this, SpaceX learned many valuable lessons from the December failure that were to be applied to the Starship launch in January. In science, the only lasting failure occurs when one does not test a new idea or hypothesis. This axiom is especially true in the context of the new space race between the United States and China.
"It’s likely that the FAA’s decision to cancel the launch is part of a wider Biden administration effort undo the Trump administration’s vibrant space policy. Plus, former President Trump’s space vision was explicitly aimed at countering advances made by China in space. It is unlikely that the Biden administration seeks to continue that policy, as the Biden team attempts to stabilize deteriorating relations with Beijing over the next few years."
There are quite a few pissed off rocket companies that are losing money. Losing money means no (re)election bribes from them for Congress. Solution: shut down SpaceX.
And despite this, which is a 2nd-stage not a first stage, they're still ahead because they've successfully landed their first stages 70+ times. They have used one of the first stages to launch 6 missions to orbit. 5 years ago, there was no such job as rocket repairman....
But 10 years ago there was, before NASA retired the Space Shuttle fleet. Rocketdyne had a good business building and refurbishing the SSMEs (they will now expend on the new NASA booster).
That didn't end well. But it did make a great video.
ReplyDeleteThat was one of Musk's toys going sideways?
ReplyDeleteYep. SN9, also known as Eileen because she fell over in the manufacturing building. There were some issues only discoverable by flying her.
DeleteOn the pad to the left of the explosion is SN10, ready to go any time now.
Official last name? "Dover"
DeleteThe rocket experienced a "R-U-D". (rapid unscheduled disassembly)

DeleteSo. I wonder to which foreign country Mr. Musk is moving his company.
DeleteThey need 2 engines to land, they had not (until now) thought of starting all 3 then turning off one of them to land.
ReplyDeleteElon himself admitted they were dumb.
DeleteAnd he was able to admit that without going through a five year FAA 'safety' study.
DeleteHe is costing government bureaucrats their jobs!
Not any more, the dems put Space X out of business.
DeleteSo now NASA is going back to moslem outreach?

DeleteStill doing better than NASA.
