  1. Winter 65-66 I was at NS Norfolk, VA going to a school there. We got three" of snow one night. Closed the base and the surrounding towns for three days until it melted. No sign of a plow or a sand truck. The town did come by the gate with a road grader on the second day. Everyone in the barracks that was from Northerly locations were amazed. We all wondered what the hell would happen if we were under attack.

    1. When I moved from Jersey to Atlanta I was stunned that the city shut down for "Gonna Snow". Literal panic in the supermarkets. Bare shelves everywhere. Flurries came the next day.

    2. I was in Atlanta for the '83 snowjam...
Freezing rain, followed by about six inches of snow, with a topping of more ice.
Started coming down about 11 am Friday.
Everyone heard the weathermen predicting snow and went 'meh' and everyone stayed at work.

Majority of Atlanta could not get home (no plows, no sand trucks, and 99% of drivers had no idea of how to drive on the stuff).
The bars and restaurants ran out of food, then the bars ran out of booze.
Students at Ga Tech made great money delivering coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts to cars stuck on the connector.

It was a week later until school opened. We were making up snow days over Easter break.

Needless to say, it took about five years before people went 'meh' when snow was predicted.

    3. I think it was '83. Was in Huntsville, AL, for business when the first storm hit. Shut down everything, including the airport. The Holiday Inn in Huntsville was the best place to be and there I was.

New edits to the documentation came in and after the thaw we started working on them again. Just as I was ready to leave a new ice storm shut everything down. This cycle repeated itself until I have been in Huntsville for almost a month.

I'll close by saying that for a 27 year old man the women in Huntsville were really nice.

  2. #4 Hmmm got a few of these assholes in here. However, the majority in here are damn cool folks. I'm sure I screwed up the context or made some major blunder wit me riting. I think they are coprophagic.

  3. #18 Used to do that with used lamination tubes. Poke four holes in the end, insert four joints plus we always poked in a extra hole for a carburetor.

  5. #1 happened to me today at the grocery store. The store finally opened another register to cash out the people behind her, but it still took awhile before they came to that conclusion.

    1. I've had that happen, too. When it did, I just pulled out 2 dollars and handed it to the clerk and told her to take 2 dollars off of the bill and get her to pay and go.
Not any more. These days I'll pay for oranges one at a time to prevent them from charging me for the weight of the plastic bag.

    2. Since we get an icy version of snow maybe once every 5 to 6 years most around here are excited while it's falling, once it starts accumulating we're past it and it's time for it to go away.
To those from up north that doesn't understand why we don't have snow removal equipment my question to you is why should we when it'll just sit around getting used once, maybe twice, every decade or so. Use your brains people.

  8. #3: so, did everyone’s father do that? Were they all incompetent morons who did not know how to fix cars, and used the process as an excuse to abuse their kids?

Did the damage they did to their cars with home repairs far outweigh the cost of actually going to a competent mechanic? Just asking.
