What? Polar bears in my yard?

Here's the perceived temperatures for 6 AM this coming Sunday for my area, the actual temperature being -2 degrees. Looks like I ain't doing shit this weekend except feeding the wood stove.

  1. I currently have -16 at 9:15 a.m. my time, and expect -20 tonight.
But we're used to it and do not give it a second thought......it's winter time in Alaska.
It all comes down to what one is used to based on where they live.
You'll survive -2 just fine. I'm happy to know that you do have plenty of firewood from that tree that you processed into firewood on the side of the road a year or two ago (I lose track of time....I remember reading daily updates about your battle with that tree, and wishing I was there to help you with it, but cannot remember how long ago it was)

    1. Ha! That was 3-4 years ago, believe it or not, and I've still got wood left from that tree, as well as some beech, maple and pecan. Matter of fact, I gave a bunch of it away to my nearest neighbor a few weeks ago because I didn't think it would go another summer without starting to rot. They heat almost entirely with wood and he didn't have enough to make through the rest of the winter and I didn't want the hickory to go to waste so he came over and loaded his truck up. I may have him come over and grab another load.

I've been exposed to sub-zero temps a few times and it doesn't bother me much - as long as I know I have a warm place to retreat to.

  2. Ah, yes. My time at Ft Campbell decades ago made me realize snow temps and I didn't get along well. Especially laying on the floor of a Huey keeping an eye on a sling load in the dead of winter.

  3. Working in northern Alberta, site temperature is -48C with wind chill at ground level. The monitor at the top of the evap tower showed -54C at 7am with wind chill.

Thankfully they cancelled the work up there till it gets warmer. Its a 200 foot climb to the platform they were scheduled to do work on. Even the millbillies don't want to work at that temp.

  8. Yep, nice to own an electric vehicle, you can heat it or drive it, but not both.
Seat heaters in those things drain the battery quick, but dont heat the air around you. I say electric cars will top off at 5% or so of sales.

    1. Well - that means GM is going to have to have nearly 100% market capture (when they stop making fossil fuel cars), and they’ll STILL be cutting their business off at the knees.

      Couldn’t happen to a nicer company. ;-)

    2. Electric vehicles make no sense, nor are they economical.
biden is going to swap the federal fleet over to electric vehicles

  9. I spent two winters in Bavaria as a young infantryman and that was enough winter to last me all my days. I live fifteen minutes from the beach in Florida now.

  11. Before Global Warming there was Cooling and we where supposed to be in a new Ice Age by now.

I never did think they knew shit and I have not seen in over 65 years to change my mind.

Things change, deal with it. Not you personally there Wirecutter. You picked up and moved over a thousand miles so I know you can deal with change. More those pussies that make the predictions.

    1. Earlier I was burning trash and threw in some used motor oil that was in the shed just to get rid of it. Big, black clouds of billowing smoke. Greta would've shit herself if she's seen that.

  15. A year or two before you moved here, I recorded an actual temperature of -10 and -7 within a week. It was witch's tit cold that year. This has been relatively mild in my experience here. Sure don't want to do much outside those days.

    1. This has been a mild winter. We've gotten more snowfall than any other year since I've been here, but it's been an inch here and an inch there with a week or two in between.
It does seem like we get a cold snap every year, though.

  16. Here in Montana, we just got our first winter blast. Temperatures below zero and light dry snow So the Snow thrower works great. Waiting on an Ammo order Fedex is having problems so the dates keeps getting pushed back. We got about a .5 inch of snow yesterday afternoon on top of the 3-4 inches we already had.

  17. Not much to say here about temps because I'm in southern California, but that Ventusky site you're using is major league cool. I had looked at it years ago but it was nowhere near as well developed as it is now. It's really cool looking at wind speeds at 30 to 40 thousand feet as they're whipping along at 130 mph. The Polar Express really stands out at that level.

    1. It's been my go-to weather site after a reader turned me on to it. It's updated constantly and is usually dead on, especially with wind speeds, which you'd appreciate in SoCal or any place that's fire prone.
What's really cool is it has a play button in the left hand corner. Click on that and watch the weather as it progresses through the week.
