2) Argiope aurantia - The Yellow Garden Spider. Known by many names. Every time we get one up under the eaves or elsewhere around the house I try to preserve them. They'll last all summer and continuously rebuild the web that includes a zig zag seam down the middle.
Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES) of a M551 Sheridan "tank". The 82nd Airborne Division had a battalion of these when I was in. A Platoon Leader buddy of mine said that they lost 1 out of 5 of them every time they dropped.
i went to one of the drops at Ft. Bragg, they had HALO first, then the troops, then the low parachute extractions commenced. As far as I could tell everything went smoothly. What I found cool as hell were the HALO guys dropping out of the sky, landing in a specific circle not by how you normally see a paratrooper hit the ground. The dudes were gliding in with the steerable chutes and nonchalantly walk the landing and bundle their chutes in their packs and walk to the muster point. God be with all those brave men and women. The AF modified a C-5 to launch cruise missiles. Looked like the C-5 had terminal diarrhea as the missiles flowed out (off?) the rear ramp. Project was terminated when they developed the rotary launchers that fit in the bomb bays of the B-52 and B-1.
