By the way, I like Scott Adams' approach to this. If you want to know the cost of having your ancestors taken as slaves, compare the average income of African Americans to black Africans -- and then realize that they are vastly better off because their ancestors were taken as slaves.
Until not long ago, blacks were "encouraged" to leave the state if they came in. Before that, they were encouraged with more of a heavy hand. 's the reason Oregon is still the whitest state.
I got a feeling my ancestors owned slaves and I make no apologies for it. Given they kept their master's name, something that was common to do after they gained freedom, I assume they were treated well. Although it must have been pretty far back because we don't seem to have any slave houses on the farm, unless they lived with everyone else. Can find slave houses in nearby towns though.
I wouldn't mind getting a refund on them though. If the descendants of great great granddaddy slave can claim reparations, then I can claim a refund adjusted for inflation!
I see lawsuits for Irish, Chinese, Eastern European, Middle Eastern and others, claiming their ancestors were slaves and they are owed reparations as well.
Given that the first three categories are white, considered white because they blow the grade curve and work hard, and white, don't hold your breath for any of them getting anything for it. The latter group might, as long as they aren't the icky Christian types.
Re: Irish and Chinese. No one wanted them as official slaves. You go buy yourself an African slave and that's a pretty big investment. Work one to death, or let him get permanently injured, and that's like you drove your nice, fully-loaded F150 off a cliff, dollar-wise. Bad move.
But if a Mick or a Chink working for wages building the railroad gets maimed or killed, you lost nothing because you had no initial investment. You just go hire yourself another one. Easy Peasy.
