Severe weather batters the South overnight

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (NewsNation Now) — Forecasters warned nearly 16 million people across the South could face powerful storms and potential tornados Thursday after a wave of storms pounded the region, leaving a trail of damage.

The National Weather Service advised residents to take extra precautions Thursday after the South was hit with nearly two dozen tornadoes and downpours Wednesday.

Our storms here petered out. I don't think we got a tenth of an inch of rain and very little thunder last night up until I went to bed about 10.
The TVA rain site said we got 1.38" of rain last night, so it must've come down pretty good between 10 and midnight - maybe. The rain gauge is located near the airport in Lafayette and I've seen downpours there, yet my place 7 miles away wouldn't have a drop of rain.

  1. Down here in deep southeast La. we were supposed to begin getting heavy rain showers about noon yesterday but it didn't arrive until 8 last night. It was rough for an hour or so, wind, heavy rain with lots of thunder andlightning. Electricity blinked a few times but never went out, overall I give it a 3.5 out of 10.

  3. Florida can be like that, literally at my house, sunny, slightly cloudy... look 2 blocks up the street and it's a gray wall of torrential downpour... if it's raining, unless it's hurricaine season, just wait 30 minutes and it'll be sunny again, but of course that equals mad humidity after

  4. I was young but I vividly remember watching a storm come down the road while I was at my grandfather's farm. The storm actually stopped a couple of hundred yards from where I was standing and then moved away. All I got was a couple of drops. This was in Pennsylvania, Not Florida where it's a common occurrence.

    1. He was fine. I gave him his doggie downer, not that he needed it as little thunder that we got.

  7. It tore ass here in Pensacola around 3AM. I even had to lower the tv volume to make sure the continuous thunder rumbles weren't a damn tornado.
Pretty good rain/thunder event and down in the upper 40s at sunrise.
