Silkie Chicken: All You Need To Know

Silkies, they have been called fluff-balls, aliens from another world, teddy bears and many other things in between.

Without a doubt they certainly are unusual looking chickens!
Their strange appearance, friendliness and mothering skills are surely what endears them to many folks.

I was friends with a Jesuit priest about 20 years ago that kept Silkies as pets. It was a little weird to be sitting out on his porch drinking beer and talking to him with all those little freaks climbing into his lap and competing with me for his attention.
What was really weird though was when he gave them their daily bath and blow dried them afterwards. They just sucked that shit up.

  1. My wife treats her chickens like house pets.

  2. I incubated some Silkie eggs and when quite a few hatched and I had no mother I fed them maggots to get them going. After a few weeks of pure protein and plenty of it they were like Arnold Schwarzenegger with attitudes to match which endured throughout their lives. As they got older one by one they became cocks and as I knocked each one on the head another would simply replace it a few days later. Only left with a couple of hens in due course.
