Through further study, he realized that it was the location of a forgotten Civil War battle in the Wilmington Campaign between United States Colored Troops and Confederates. Fonvielle wrote a very readable book about the taking of Fort Fisher and the Wilmington Campaign. I remember going to what's left of the once-massive Fort Fisher complex as a kid, most of it has been erased by hurricane erosion. Lots of history in Wilmington.
