Battle of Forks Road, a Recently Discovered Battle and Battlefield

 In 1980, Chris Fonvielle Jr. came across a piece of land that now sits next to the Cameron Art Museum. Through further study, he realized that it was the location of a forgotten Civil War battle in the Wilmington Campaign between United States Colored Troops and Confederates.   1. Fonvielle wrote a very readable book about the taking of Fort Fisher and the Wilmington Campaign. I remember going to what's left of the once-massive Fort Fisher complex as a kid, most of it has been erased by hurricane erosion. Lots of history in Wilmington.
