Earth-Shattering ka-Boom! How (and Why) Guns Explode

VIDEO HERE  (31:21 minutes)

Just yesterday Scott at Kentucky Ballistics posted a very sobering video detailing his Serbu RN-50 quite literally exploding in his face. A lot of people have asked if I have seen it, and I figured this is a good opportunity to discuss the different ways in which guns can explode, and what some manufacturers have historically done to fail-safe their designs.

Scott's original video on the event:

  1. All guns 'splode. I had a Ma Deuce blow up in my face in '73 because of a stupid armorer not ditching a bad barrel with worn detents, and headspace backed off to where three rounds went off on me. Took many years to fix that damage. He's still hiding in the woods I suppose.

  2. Hey kids, don't load ammo in your boomstick that doesn't have powder and bullet specs that fit your platform. That means, no yard sale ammo. Especially fitty cal! Seriously though, dude got lucky. Ohio Guy

  3. I disagree, the weapon didn't "explode", the threaded breech cap failed. My suspicions are the SLAP round of quite literally unprovable provenience. If you're not shooting factory ammo, or your own reloads (if you actually know what the fuck you are doing) you take a big chance every time you stroke the trigger.

    1. Lucky indeed. He states in the video his jugular vein was cut. His camera man (Dad) drove him to meet the ambulance while he stuck his own thumb in the hole to slow the bleeding. He's tough as a two dollar steak!

  5. Paul Harrell (y'all really must watch his videos) has been warning of this for years. So has Jerry M, I think.

This man is very lucky to be alive. From nothing going right to everything going right in 3 minutes.

    1. Um, you didn't notice that's the exact same video I linked to? I mean, the same caption and commentary and everything? Really?

    1. I couldn't sit through the whole thing but I believe he said saboted (sic) projectiles and muzzle brakes don't mix. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  10. I’ve been reloading since 1977. Saw a bit of a “how hot can we get it” trend in the mid eighties that resulted in quite a few destroyed firearms, but most of us just liked to shoot a lot and it was a way to save money. I can’t find shit for components right now that aren’t way overpriced. Makes me paranoid as fuck when I go to the range. Too many numb nuts putting ammo together based on some shit they saw on YouTube. It ain’t rocket science, but it is a hobby that requires a great deal of attention to detail and no distractions.
