Check cat for tape worms. I had adopted a cat that would tear cat food bag open, was hungry all the time. The worms make it hard for cat to absorb nutrients. I found the cat had "segments" shed from it's butt, looked like sesame seeds. Used a pill you can get at pet store, dewormer.
When my FiL passed, we took in his cat. The cat was a barn cat that we gave to him for companionship. They were best buds. Anyway, since we already had three dogs and two cats, Cisco went into hiding for the first few weeks. We have food out for the cats all the time but he never touched it. He would raid the pantry for bread and pretty much anything he could drag away and eat. He worked his way out of that habit and became my bud. Sat in the chair with me; lay on the couch or bed we me. Good friend. Passed away about a year ago. Now I've got Klaus. A pig...
My cat is fed regularly yet every time I set the shopping down, same shit. Only difference is my cat is health-conscious, wholemeal only please!

Our cat was the same way. Well fed (maybe too much so), but always went for the forbidden fruit.
