Cleveland Indians' Ten Cent Beer Night: The Worst Idea Ever

On June 4, 1974, the Cleveland Indians held "Ten Cent Beer Night."

The club intended to offer as much eight-ounce Stroh's beer as fans could drink—and for only 10 cents a pop.

Now some background from before the Indians played the Texas Rangers that night.

Six days earlier there was a bench-clearing brawl between the two teams at Arlington Stadium in Texas.

  1. One very important piece of history is being left out on this infamous day.
While the ten cent beer night was indeed listed, everyone fails to mention that it was also "bat night" where small bats were given out to the crowd.
imagine being drunk on ten cent beer and having brand-new billy club sized bats to pay back the Rangers...good times

  2. When fans rush the field, all players are on the same team. Stupid is thinking you can go up against big, young, healthy men who have baseball bats. In 1984 the Braves and Padres went at it several times in a game, but when a fan decided he could fight a player, guess who both teams went after?

  3. Baseball has been looking for more excitement. Bingo. Doesn't have to be the game. Anarchy and Baseball League.

  4. I used to bounce a bar in San Diego that had a ten-cent beer night, back in '77 or so. Ducked a lot of pool balls and pitchers. There was one night the cops showed, broke it up, and tried arresting me - the only biker in the crowd. The owner stopped them just in time. The whole experiment only lasted a few weeks before the owner realized he was losing his ass on broken furniture and glassware.

  5. Worst idea ever? I believe a certain whale carcass packed with explosives might take umbrage with that assessment...

  6. Stroh's, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. "Fire-Brewed Beer", whatever the hell that means.

Not a terrible beer; at least it isn't an IPA

  7. The only saving grace was it was a Tuesday night and everyone had to work the next day. Burke Lakefront Stadium. Saw Pink Floyd there in 77’. 80 thousand stoners and only a few fights. And everyone there was damn sure stoned. The good old days. Not too sure if we’ll see their likes again. Makes me sad. Eod1sg Ret

  8. I just can't believe Stroh's is still around! I drank a few of them in my day.

Don't forget, Strohs is shorts spelled backwards!

  9. Can we do it again?
Only this time with a third of the crowd receiving tequila, another third LSD, and the rest get mushrooms.

  10. Stroh's beer. Brewed with water taken from the Detroit river, which is why they had to fire brew it. Not that I didn't help keep them in business. But the worst idea ever? Disco night at the ball park. I think I was drinking a Stroh's over my ex in-laws while watching this game.

On a side note, my 100lb ex MIL could pound down 15 Stroh's on a good night. What a gal she was. We are going to my youngest grandsons grad party this weekend and all the ex in laws(siblings) will be there. I should pick up a case for the party for old times sake.

  11. My brother had a couple t-shirts with a funny character and a camera on them. They all had in print "Pose With a Strohs" or "Breakfast of Champions" with a drunk cartoonish character. Growing up in Cleveland, Strohs was popular in the corner bars. Then again, unemployment was high.
