Millions of Americans Could Face Eviction as Housing Protection Expires in June

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's eviction moratorium, which has been in effect since September, will lift on June 30. Although the policy has been far from perfect at keeping renters housed, it's reduced the normal number of eviction filings over the same time period by at least a half, according to Peter Hepburn, an assistant professor of Sociology at Rutgers University-Newark and research fellow at The Eviction Lab.

Experts say the number of evictions could skyrocket when the ban lifts. Around 15% of adult renters are not current on their housing payments, according to an analysis by The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Cry me a river......many of the people that took advantage of the moratoriums used the money for other things and blew off paying rent, whereas the landlords still had to pay the mortgage to the bank, and a lot of cases they lost the property to the bank. The renters got a free ride, but the landlords didn't.

    3. When you look at everything from the perspective of destroying America and bringing about global rule, every event and action makes sense.

      Banks and the well connected buy up all of those small time properties and further crush out the middle class while increasing centralized control over housing and living spaces. Soon, government and a hand full of corporates will control all housing, big homes in the countryside will be exclusively for the multi-millionaire and up class.

  6. I have heard and read some horror stories of landlords taking it in the ass due to our good intention .gov. Most in .gov have never owned and ran a business so have not clue what their decisions have on others. Let’s just say that this moratorium was a shit show from the start. Rush had a saying about liberals and I paraphrase, “expect the opposite from what ever a liberal says their actions intend to do”.

    1. I'm a landlord and have been for 50 years.

      These aren't the first hard times I've lived through and your point is exactly correct.

      Better a partial rent payment than no rent payment because the tenant moves out to live with a friend or his family.

      Also, the banks are not foreclosing unless utterly forced into it by a landlord paying nothing at all and maybe being belligerent. The banks don't need the bad publicity or writing down their loan portfolios so they are mostly taking part payments and letting the mortgagor eat into his equity, with both lender and borrower hoping for better times.

  8. From my understanding the main issue is with property financed through the federal loan programs, freddy may the other one something mac. Those loans are financed through the federal government so it holds the loans to the property and in that case can make rules for that property. In other cases the landlords are participating in the secton 8 housing programs, again a government program for guaranteed partial payments for the tenants. If you don't want the government in your business don't sign up for their programs. This whole situation sucks and I know many will disagree with me but when you dance with the devil you will get burned.

  10. I have a buddy who has 11 rental properties as retirement income. All are paid off except for three. He has 5 renters that are behind on their rent. Four of them haven't paid anything in over a year. He can't evict and he had to sell his primary residence to cover the taxes, insurance, and repairs. He and his wife are living in a camper until he can get full rental income again. His biggest worry is that when he can evict how much is it going to cost to repair the property to get it rentable again. His view is that people who know they are going to be evicted tend to do a lot of damage to the property.

    1. What state are they in and are the 3 financed through any federal programs and does he participate in any kind of section 8 rental assistance programs. Here in La.the state backed off any holds on rent way back, except New Orleans which is a financially bankrupt liberal shithole for anyone who has a little money, that wasn't tied to those programs mentioned. File your eviction notices and bring them to civil court, 3 months or more late, no way to make it good, damaged the property, out you went. There was a bunch of moaning and groaning from the perpetually offended but there was nothing they could do about it.
      Before I was forced into retirement due to my health back in January I had a business that basically was the maintenance and repair department for 10 different landlords holding 8 units or more. The last several months we stayed busy moving a whole lot of left behind junk, painting and getting the units ready for waiting new tenants. YMMV

  11. Man, I dunno about banks being nice about mortgages not being paid. My lender'd send goons over to throw me out if I were as little as 2 months late. I feel for the landlords. If their lenders are smart enough to understand that if they foreclose, then the renter still stays, then they're much smarter than the average lender who only understands "no pay, book says we foreclose".

  13. All the renters have had how many months now to learn a new skill or find new employment? They could have had a trade skill SCHOOL complete in the time these illegal memorandums have been in place.

    Likewise, landlords should know to keep a pillow fund but I doubt many people anticipated the extent of government and globalist meddling in the free market.
