  1. 68 on PI I carried and qualified with an M-14. Went to Geiger and carried an M-14 I don't think I ever fired it. Went on Boot Leave then to Pendleton. That's where I saw my first M-16. I was taught how to take it apart and put it back together. Went to the range one day and fired a couple clips from it, that was it. In Nam I was given a beat up piece a shit M-16 with camouflaged tape that was falling off it. It was filthy but not for long. I think we were issued seven clips and they were in rough shape too.

    1. When i went in the Marines in 80 we had the M-16A1 and boy were they worn out, that when i found that you could wear them out just cleaning them and putting a bunch of rounds thru can bend a barrel, the main reason i have not bought one since i got out in 84!!! grayman

  3. I trained and qualified with an M-14 during '69. One year later ('70) was the first time I saw an M-16 was when it was issued to me in VN. It was light weight plastic junk, three pronged flash supressor prone to grabbing elephant grass and bamboo, not discounting the fact it jammed frequently.
I ended up buying an M-1 30 caliber Carbine from an ARVN and carried it.

    1. My late BIL joined the marines in late 69 or early 70. He trained and qualified on the M14 and 1911. He never had a good thing to say about the M16 or any other pistol than the 1911. I joined the AF in 68 and trained on clapped out M16's. Actually had very little to do with guns throughout my 12 years in the AF but my distaste for the M16 remained until around 2006 when I had the opportunity to shoot a couple of nice AR's. I actually do like my conventionally stocked Mini 14's and Remington 30-06's more but AR's are kind of my "side chick" sort of guns, I hook up with them when I want to have a little fun.

  4. Cato, It was in Nam that I saw the, Made by Mattel, on that plastic stock. I thought for Christ sakes my kid sisters toy company made this thing. "If it's made by Mattel it's swell!" Ya gotta be shittin me! I reckon there was a whole lot about that outfit I didn't know when I signed up. 3/1 India 68-69.

The three prong was great for snappin C-rat wire though eh?
