Those Dakota fire holes are not as easy to use as described.
I never had a problem with them. You just have to build your air hole upwind of the fire hole.

That's one way to jump start a Dakota fire hole. In theory you orient the inlet hole towards the prevailing wind so you don't have to improvise a bellows.

Watch the smoke and flame, his hole is mostly in to the prevailing wind.
I believe this is the way the Spetnatz are trained to make their camp fires. The flame is less likely to be spotted. Al_in_Ottawa
