Remington settles on Sandy Hook lawsuit

Remington and the families of nine victims from the Sandy Hook school massacre, the second-deadliest school shooting in US history, have reached a settlement that was years in the making: the gun-maker and manufacturer of the Bushmaster AR-15 used by shooter Adam Lanza will pay a total of $33MM. Divided up among the families, that comes to $3.66MM each (before the lawyer's cut). The families insist the money is no substitute for the brutal killing of their loved one.

  1. What is Lanza's portion of that award? Maybe he can work it off?

    1. Lanza killed himself on site before police could question him. Nothing to see here. Similar to the "shooter" in Las Vegas.

    2. Settling is not a conviction and sets no precedent.

  2. Should never have paid. Period.

    1. Totally agree. The fact this case was not dismissed out of hand because law prevents suing gun manufacturers, now sets precedent for law suits against of gun manufacturers. The Demonrats are going to get rid of guns one way or the other. 'Course that makes existing guns worth a lot more.

    2. In the current anti gun environment, going to trial might be risky.
Who knows what a bunch of liberal fags in a jury might award them?
      $100M? $200?
Settle for less & it all goes away. Lawyers call that win-win; I wonder why?
What really stinks is the precedent it sets, whereby people or company's can be sued for misuse of a product they make.
      Utter bullshit.

  4. What a load of crap. It never was about the dead, it was about profiting off of the dead and Remington was stupid to settle. Now that sets a new precedent for arms manufacturers to be sued bloody when the law says they are NOT liable. Remington deserved what they got, but the rest of the manufacturers sure didn't deserve to tarred by these cowards at Remington.

  5. So you can sue a gun maker but not a vaccine manufacturer.

  6. I can see a lot of people are going to say that Remington sold us out, and should not have settled. The thing is, they had to deal with their own money, not yours. They had to deal with a business that was not even theirs when the event happened, and they are now trying to rebuild their name, and their brand, at probably the worst possible time for a gun related business in decades.
This is going to sting for them, but the money spent trying to continue to fight this would likely cost them a lot more than the settlement. And like the proverbial band-aid on the skin, best to just rip it off, and be done with it, and then get back to trying to regroup and get their legs under themselves for the coming days ahead.
Sometimes, you just have to give people the benefit of the doubt. Especially if you want them to be able to add to the stock of ammo available to the gun owners, by being able to remain a viable business. Because make no mistake, these gun haters would like nothing better than to shut down every gun maker and ammo manufacture in the country.

    1. “And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.”

  7. this is the beginning, not the end. once they've cracked open that wallet expect the gravy train to line up for their share. remington will be no more.

  8. I only hope logic will prevail on appeal.
How anyone can blame a manufacturer for what a person does with their product, defies logic.

    1. Higher courts have ALREADY heard appeals.
A lower court properly threw out the suit based on PLCAA.
They then used the CT consumer protection law, CT Supremes gave that the thumbs up to go ahead.
SCOTUS also gave their blessing to this travesty.
The suit was about Rem’s advertising. Lanza didn’t give a shit about advertising, he didn’t buy the gun. He murdered to get get the gun and then murdered some more.
The courts have failed the country once again.

Remington’s insurers settled and that’s nothing the insured really has a say in. Unless you fire your insurance company and decide to take on ALL liability yourself, frankly you don’t get a vote. To do that in a case that’s in CT, where the state supreme court has already weighed in would be suicidal.

  10. Horrible long-term mistake by Remington. They were likely to never be held liable for anything, but just wanted to reduce their litigation costs. But in the process, betrayed their core customers. Doubt they will be able to stay in the firearms business very much longer. Nobody who believes in the 2A should buy from these guys in the future.

  11. So Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Toyota and the rest are open to lawsuits when a drunk driver kills an innocent person.

  14. When you pay the Danegeld you will never be rid of the Dane. Every time there is a payout or settlement for these ILLEGAL lawsuits it only encourage more parasites and shysters to keep trying. And the Protection Of Lawful Commerce In Arms Act SPECIFICALLY makes these lawsuits illegal. The fact that ANY judge allows them to even be filed let alone proceed is elegant proof that our legal system is corrupt an broken beyond repair. Burn it all down, hang all the judges and start over.

  15. I think they were ill-advised by their lawyers because since they were sued, it opened up discovery and man could be have learned a lot about what really happened. I'm with Alex Jones on this one...not buying the incident.
