Jefferson Davis

Two individuals come to mind at the mention of the Confederate States of America, General Robert E. Lee and Former-President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis. Both General Lee and Davis were men of principle and conviction as they stood up for what they believed; however, for a variety of historically complicated reasons, General Lee became a far bigger symbol of the Confederacy after its demise than Davis. Although Davis remains a sort of avatar for the end of states’ rights, some have come to view him as a Southern patriot.

  1. Jefferson Davis should be revered by all Americans.
A true Patriot who loved the Constitution, his State and his Nation.

  2. Well, Wirecutter, you certainly opened a door for tremendous debate and such. Jefferson Davis was never someone I looked up to, not like Sam Houston or Longstreet, Grant and Sherman. Davis always seemed a cold duck, my way or the highway. The Confederacy could have fought the war to a standstill by remaining in its own borders. The story of a Yankee asking a captured seceesh, "Why are you fighting this war?" and the answer, "'Cause y'all down here."

  3. As USA Secretary Of War during the 1850s, Jefferson Davis advocated exploration in the Arizona and Nevada territories.
The harsh terrain was tough on hoofed animals such as mules, so Secretary Davis sent USNavy Lt. Ed Fitzgerald Beale to Arabia to evaluate camels as an alternative.
Beale returned with enough camels and Arabian handlers to complete the exploration.
    .
After a decade of mapping and establishing minor communities, Beale released the camels into the deserts of the future Nevada.
    And they thrived!
    .
After expressing his significant dissatisfaction with the systemic brutality used by northern leaders during the invasions of the sovereign Confederate States, Beale abandoned his commission.
Heading west, he established the organized California Militias, rising to General.
    .
Northern California's home to the SR-71 and U-2 spy planes, Beale Air Force Base is named in his honor.

  4. There is an excellent museum complex in Bardstown, KY. https://bardstownmuseumrow.org/
Inside the entrance are 2 paintings. One of KY native Abraham Lincoln and one of ... no, not fellow KY native Jefferson Davis, but Gen. Robert Edward Lee. Even museums in his home state know who is the best to represent The South.
Full Disclosure: My Virginia roots go back to at least the 1660s.
