  1. #5 ,As much as a pain they are, that's why you have building codes as county/municipal building inspectors.

    1. Building codes? wtf would that have done any good? It was the homeowner who added it, inspector's long gone.

Now, obviously the homeowner (and anyone who helped them) should have known better. But many people underestimate the weight of water.

    2. Only if the 'inspector' has a working knowledge of what is being inspected.

Too often, especially in smaller towns, the 'Inspections Department' is nothing but retired cops and firemen double-dipping after retirement.

    3. Authoritarian pig! No. They are just incredibly stupid and this is the price. Codes do not change that. Morons might believe they do, though.

This was so stupid, that any sympathy I had for them was more than negated and so I had a good laugh out loud. Perfect timing on that photo. I suspect it was staged. That house looks about ready to come down anyways and the structual supports on the deck do not look like a serious effort.

Before the coronohoax, this lumber wasn't all that expensive and the hot tub might be a patch job ready for the heap, as well.

So, that is how much that photo stimulated me - to write all that.

    4. My house had a second story deck about that size. I had that and the lower deck removed and a patio poured. The contractor told me that it had been only nailed to the house. They should have used 8 inch screws.

  2. #5 That looks like a full hot tub on a way to skimpy deck.

  3. #5 is definitely self inflicted. Reminds me of something I said to a colleague once. “I can’t certify it, but I can tell you how it will break.”

  6. That deck was under designed even before the hot tub was added.

    1. Yep. Looks like 2x8 joists on a 14' span. The maximum span, with light load is 12' for 2x8 lumber at 16" centers. Personally I wouldn't span more than 8' with 2x8's.

Also, the deck should have been supported with at least 6x6 posts at minimum. I would have used 8x8's. The bracing, although installed at the right angles, was undersized. The deck also should have had diagonal bracing across the underside of the joists to prevent racking. And by the look of the photo, the rim joist against the side of the house was just nailed on. Should have had lag or through bolts every 24" on center staggered top/bottom of joist.

If I was going to put a hot tub on a deck, it would be framed with 2x12's on 12" centers and mid span posts and triple girder underneath.

Disclaimer; I'm not an engineer but have been a carpenter for 40 plus years and built/remodeled several dozen houses, as well as quite a few years in commercial construction.

    2. Mike Guenther, I am with you. That deck is so wrong I don't know where to begin. I would have strongly advised no hot tub on that deck. I would have wanted a signed letter from the owner to that effect. People are the worst, plan for it.

    1. Really? A shattered stove top?

I saw a cool piece of art, with the top burners being the eyes, and the center burner the nose, of some shaggy beast.

      I'll have to look again.

    2. OK, after you kindly answered my question, I gave it another look, embiggened, and still don't see it. I'll just take your word. Thanks.

  8. #5 - No outside steps up to the deck. The only way to get on to the deck is by crawling through a window.
