GM, Ford Temporarily Stop Making Some Pickups as Chip Shortage Worsens

The global shortage of computer chips is getting worse, forcing automakers to temporarily close factories including those that build popular pickup trucks.

General Motors announced Thursday that it would pause production at eight of its 15 North American assembly plants during the next two weeks, including two that make the company's top-selling Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

  1. It's obviously a consperacy to destroy middle America. The Progressive Democrats know Conservatives love pick-ups. So by withholding them it will lead to mass rust-belt depression and suicides.

  2. With all the freebees the left is giving away to 'sell' 'the jab', maybe we can expect a new pickup next?

  3. It isn't just the auto manufacturers. The company which employs me has seen lead times for some electronic parts stretch out to 48 weeks. We've been fortunate since we stocked parts two years ago that are now in short supply so we can keep building product...for now.

  4. All the large heavy duty truck manufacturer's have stopped taking orders, the local Peterbilt dealer won't even quote a new truck to me.

  5. And with supplies low, let's price gouge Americans. What the heck, GM has greater loyalty to the CCP than the taxpayers that bailed them out of trouble.

    1. And why shouldn't we? They're the future. You guys are the past, soon to be history.

  7. That's OK, I've been wanting to buy one of those Dodge Ram trucks that rust out the wheel wells, tailgate and back bumper in a few years.

  8. How about just quit making all those vehicles with all the electronics. Go back to changing the points and plugs, adjust the carburator and set the timing.

  10. Coming soon: I'll swap you 20 rolls of Charmin for an Intel graphics chipset.

  11. Hey, Here's an idea... why don't they just make a truck without a chip... Like the time when the American auto industry actually made quality products. I still have a 1974 Chevy with a 350 and it still runs great.

  12. In Kanada, Toyota has suspended production of the RAV4 as well, for the same reason. Officially, only a few weeks, but....

Honda plant up here is on slowdown, but haven't heard reasons yet. I have contacts in plants and Tier 1 suppliers.

  13. I remember when GM (Delco) use to make their own semiconductors in Kokomo.

  14. Probably a horseshit story to drive prices up more. They are probably doing factory change over to 2022 models early as they always do in the fall. With the shitty market they have had for the last 18 months.

  15. I just put a new set of points in my car, the only chips it has are the ones that get dropped between the seats.
