NEW YORK - The agency that runs several bridges and tunnels in the New York City region says it has caught a driver who owes $58,000 in unpaid tolls and fees. They were considered one of the top toll violators in the area.
I've never lived in an area that had toll roads and the thought of having to pay to travel on a road is almost impossible for me to fathom. Hell, it used to piss me off to pay a toll to cross the Bay and Golden Gate bridges in San Francisco.
Back in the 50's when the Mass Turnpike, a toll road running from Boston to the western border was built, the state legislature claimed that as soon as the construction costs were paid for the road would be free. Guess what? They lied.
We did finally pay off the Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego. Toll booths gone. Never thought it would happen. I think some court filings were required to get CALDOT to get lost.
$58,000 ?
ReplyDeleteThat's nothing. Sell one painting to an unidentified buyer and he can pay it off.
Wait for the Federal "By the mile" tolls I.D.ed by GPS that's harvesting your car's black box.

The same claim was made about the Golden Gate Bridge - in 1937.
