Car sales plunge as computer chip shortages choke off supply

New car sales plunged over the last three months in the United States despite strong demand, as the shortage of computer chips and other supply chain issues caused shutdowns at auto factories and choked off the supply of vehicles.

*****

And used car prices are through the roof.
My F-150 has 192k miles on it and when this engine goes tits up, I'm just going to have it rebuilt rather than buy another vehicle at an outrageous price.
What the hell, the transmission is only 18 months old and the body's in good shape, so why not?

  1. I looked up just how many chips are in an “average” car ——— per Google - 3 THOUSAND chips in the average car…..

  3. I'm not interested in a new rig because my 18 year old Ford Ranger has three features you just can't get on a new vehicle:
    1- Roll up windows
2- Low annual registration fees, and
3- NO FRICKIN" COMPUTER SCREEN STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF MY DASHBOARD!

Oh, and it's also got a really slick anti-theft device called a manual transmission.

    1. I have a 2011 tacome four wheel drive with a five speed anti-theft device. Only has 96,000 on it with the same features as yours. I checked the value on it and it's 4,000 less then what I paid for it. (in devalued dollars of course). It's the last vehicle I'll ever have to buy.

  6. I'm sure the auto executives almost broke their arms patting themselves on the back when they offshored chip production. Sadly, most of them took their golden parachutes and bailed before this mess hit and won't feel the pain their decisions caused.

  7. 2006 Duramax. I get asked weekly if I want to sell it. 100K and it will go 300K easy. It was the year before the smog crap went on Diesels. It's show room clean. 6 inch Fabtech lift, Bagged. It would cost me 100K to replace it and I think all the new trucks are butt ugly.
For the last couple years there have been businesses popping up buying older trucks and going thru them and reselling them. I don't need or want a heads up display on my truck.

  9. Rental companies lost a few cars for the insurance money a while back. In hindsight, they would have wanted to sell them.

I'm not sure whatever happened to these cars, either.

  10. I bought an '04 Chevy Silverado a couple of years ago cash for $9k...150k miles on it, pretty much garage queen body on it. I checked a couple of months ago on the current price when I first heard about the chip shortage...damn thing had pretty much doubled in price for the same used truck.

  11. 04 diesel Excursion, when I bought it, it was the last vehicle I'd ever buy; I told myself at the time. So far, so good.

  12. '06 F-150 4x4 county vehicle bought at auction for $1,400 bucks. 225K on the odometer. Put a reman crate engine in it 4 years ago. With the new engine, new tires and a jammin' stereo system, less than 7K all in. Then had tranny rebuilt two years ago. Still less than 10K for a nice truck.

To replace it with a new one would cost me about 70 grand.

  13. Driving a 2002 Honda SUV that was my wife's vehicle. Had only 60,000 on it when she died in 2016. It has 130,000 on it now, still runs like it was new. Texas sun has ruined the paint and the AC has crapped out. Made it thru this summer without the AC (barely), so now I can use it till next summer. By then I might be too old to drive anyway.

    1991 Buick Riviera 150k 26-28mpg

Have $4k total into all 4 vehicles, costs 200$/month to insure all 4, and I have had them all for years, and will for years to come. Can't for the life of me understand why the masses believe new cars are better, and shell out $$$$$ every month to prove they're ignorance and virtue.

  15. 2004 3/4 V10 it just turned 106K Miles. I have not decided on another vehicle. My Ford Bronco 1977 (last year of the originals which I should have kept) had less than 100K on the rebuilt engine and trans when I sold it. I kept it for 19 years

  20. Probably a smart idea. I doubt if you could drive away with any new car or truck worth having for less than $40,000 these days, unless you bought a piece of bottom-of-the-line crap.

And you can bet it's gonna be $42,000 by next year.

  21. In July an oak tree fell on my work truck and my car. It killed the truck but I was able to beat the roof of the car out well enough to put a windshield and back glass in it to get me by until I can replace it.
    I've been shopping.
    I'm fucked.

  22. Just what I (don't) want is a car or truck that will not leave the driveway until you download and install updates like an iPhone. I'll be keeping my '06 Tundra no gps for the duration since I now put only about fifty miles a week on it.

  23. the transmission is only 18 months old and the body's in good shape, so why not?

because you are breaking the rules. America is counting on you buy a new truck and to spend twice what my parents house cost when it was new...and it took the 30 years to pay for it

  24. I just replaced my commuter car with a new car (Honda Civic, lowest trim level as basic and unfancy as I could get). When I checked the dealer's website they had "1" in stock and when I signed up to test drive it they asked me if I wanted to put a deposit on it to hold it, it was actually on a truck several states and a week or two away despite what the website said.
I got the car but the sales guy told me that these days someone puts $ down on their cars before they arrive. Their lot was empty-eeeee. He also said they (this dealer) normally sold about 40 some cars a month, last month they sold 4 and mine was one of those 4.
I hope this supply thing can clear up because how can they stay in business moving only 10% of their normal sales volume?

  25. As I understand it the chips are from Taiwan and they are claiming The CCPFlu for their inability to manufacture them. Sounds like crap to me. Intel says years to ramp up production of the old technology chips. Oh, and I drive by a Kia dealer everyday and their lot is stuffed.

  26. My next door neighbor works at a local Dodge dealership. He's the assistant maintenance manager. He decided he wanted a new truck about a month ago. He told me it "might" be delivered near the end of November, if he's lucky. He's thinking probably Christmas, maybe early January.

  27. Scotty Kilmer (youtube) has covered this a few times. Older pre-tech cars run forever and can be sold now for more than you paid for them.
If China moves on Taiwan you can forget about new cars or high tech consumer goods.

  28. Wait a year. All those clueless, gullible fools who fell for Doctor Fauci's Gene Pool Bleach will be offloading their assets for a few cents on the dollar. That $60,000 Dodge Pickup? There will be so many desperate victims trying to sell ANYTHING to survive, they'll let those trucks go for a couple cents on the dollar. Same with houses, just like the seditious gay Kenyan commie planned.

  29. My 1980 CMC K2500 only has 20,000 on an engine rebuild, and the metal is in pretty good shape. Probably the last vehicle I will ever own. Have had many offers to buy it, but no way am I parting with it.

  30. My '03 Tahoe has a rebuilt transmission and I'll drive her until the wheels fall off. My buddy bought a new GMC Sierra pick up last spring and a few weeks ago showed up with a brand new Yukon XL SUV. He said the dealership called and offered to BUY his pick up for nearly the cost they sold it to him for just to get the pick up truck. Crazy.
