Authorities in Quintana Roo, the state where Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun are located, said one of the dead women was Anjali Ryot.
An Instagram account under the same name showed a post of Ryot lounging and smiling on a seaside pier in Tulum two days ago. It listed her as a travel blogger from Himachal, India, living in California. A linked Facebook page said she lived in San Jose.
The cartels used to leave the tourist areas alone. That changed about three or so years ago. Now all tourist areas are infested with gangs and drugs. I have a good friend who has an ongoing tech project in Acapulco. He sent me a phone video of a gunfight erupting in Acapulco while he hunkered down behind a car on the street. Mexico is a total narco state. If SHTF here they will play a much larger role in post revolutionary USA than anyone suspects.
