Not a fan - of Star Wars, that is

I saw the movie one time when it first came out. Well, it had been out for a year or two, it just hadn't made it to the American movie theaters in Germany yet.

One of my buddies had been ranting and raving about Star Wars for months and months and couldn't wait to see it, so one night we were drinking in a bar downtown when he heard it was playing in a German theater just a few blocks away and he just had to go.

It was an American movie dubbed over in Turkish with German subtitles. Yeah.

Now I spoke German pretty damned good and could read it somewhat back then, but as drunk as I was I don't think I could've followed it even if it was in German with English subtitles. Dave didn't give a shit, we stayed the whole damned movie and he swore afterwards it was the best damned movie he'd ever seen which told me he was even more fucked up than I was.

  1. Its one of those movies that you either like or you don't, Like Blazing Saddles, Goonies, Labyrinth, and The Princess Bride.

I don't care for any of the movies above, except for Blazing Saddles, but I am a huge Star Wars nerd. The Old School 3 movies are amazing, the second 3 were okay, and the most recent 3 that Disney made were absolute abominations.

    1. Saw Blazing Saddles when I was a senior in college. We went out for beers beforehand and laughed our asses off. Sad thing is, Mel Brooks couldn’t make that movie today. Whenever it’s rebroadcast I record it and watch all over again. I’ve only seen the original 3 Star Wars flicks. I thought Peter Jackson did well with Lord of the Rings, but YMMV.

  3. Never saw a whole episode. Throughout life I've been where tv's were on and I guess it was one of the movies or and advertisement. I don't pay a lot of attention to tv. Movie theaters and I don't agree with one another. Though I took my kid to several movies she had to see as a kid. I'd see she was settled and go to the lobby and read. Check on her from time to time. Sure was glad when she got older and could do that on her own or with a friend.

  4. I like Star Wars. Gives one hope that no matter how bad things are they can get better, or worse. Even though there was a galaxy wide war you could be somewhere peaceful.

  5. Saw the first one in theaters seven times. "Empire", three. "Ewoks" once. Silly. I saw "Phantom Menace" once in the theater and none of the others. I have them all on DVD but just can't watch episodes I, II, & III. I can't even watch the first three any more. For some reason I need for movies to be serious.

  7. I liked "Star Wars". I saw it in the theater when it first came out.

The special effects were state of the art - for 1977. And, one of the things I liked most about it is that up until that time, space operas all had to have some kind of "inner meaning". Heck, even Star Trek always had some new age lesson for everyone.

Star Wars was a breath of fresh air for the sci-fi aficionado. No inner lessons beyond good vs evil, just a lot of swash and buckle. Yeah, it was campy as hell but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I still do.

To me, the biggest star of the entire movie was John Williams, the man who produced the music. I would always stay for the entire credit roll just to listen to the closing theme.

PS: I still say John Williams "Imperial March" (Darth Vader's theme), is the best wedding march music ever composed. (Unfortunately, most brides disagree with me.)

  8. Star Wars was pretty good, but Empire Strikes Back is the best movie of the whole franchise.
