Propane Heating Costs Hit Highest Level Since 2011 as Winter Approaches

Propane heating costs in the U.S. rocketed to $2.59 per gallon this month, the highest level in a decade, as winter quickly approaches, the federal government said Friday.

The average cost of propane during the first four weeks of the current winter season, which begins in October, was 49% higher than last year, according to an Energy Information Administration (EIA) report. The agency noted that the low propane supply is a major reason for the increased prices.

Let's see, who was the president in 2011, the last time propane prices were this high?
Oh yeah, Obama - Brandon's boss. Are we surprised?

  1. $2.49 would be a bargain here -- last weeks fill here of 120 gal to a "permanent" 500 gal tank was about $3.60/gal

  2. My propane tank was filled last Thursday here in NorCal. $3.64 a gallon.
Cheapest gas here is $4.50 a gallon.
PG&E Tier One rate is just over 26¢ per KwH. Tier Two is just over 32¢.

Looking on the bright side, fire season is over so I don't have to worry about my house burning down for a few months.

  3. $.99lb in Charles Town. 2 100lb tanks (25gal) filled for $208. They always seem to waste a bit more in than I get in the tanks. That I can still pick them up and carry them tells me they're a little lighter than their meter says they are.

    1. Every time I get my trailer tanks filled I use a 100#fish scale before and after. Have only called out one dealer so far (Texaco)

  4. Color me shocked, that fossil fuel is higher priced now. I mean, who could have predicted such a thing?

  5. Just looked at my propane billing records. I haven't paid anything close to @2.59/gallon since November 2013. I've been forking over more than $3/gallon every delivery since. (Virginia)

  6. $17 to fill a BBQ tank, a standard 20#, So that's around $4/gal; I may shop around but that seems to be what it costs here in Texas. Last time I filled it was around $34 for two tanks (new).

This is why I use barrel heaters for my greenhouses; other energy sources are too expensive or unreliable.

    1. HOLY CRAP!
Time to shop around for a new supplier. Play 'em like a fiddle, Anon. They've got a lot of room to wiggle.

This might help to figure out if you're being hosed.

  9. Gotta brag, I got my shop tank filled last month for $2.19/g. It helps to own the tank and pit the suppliers against each other.

    1. Maybe so, but your governor is still Kate Brown.
      So much for bragging rights.

  10. I always fill in Sept, last year $1.69/gallon, this year $1.99. I own my tank and can shop around, this year there was a 40 cent spread between the highest and lowest, 40 cents x 400 gallons= worth shopping around.
