What Was It Like To Be A Vietnam Medic?

  1. I had just finished watching this the night before my fated hospital visit for a small "procedure" and ended up held incommunicado for 25 days. Even in my pain-medicated haze I told the doc to get advice from a military surgeon because my wound was JUST like an NVA bullet to the gut and those guys know their shit.

He took my advice. He didn't say so in so many words, but he goddam did, and THAT is why I lived through this, or am currently in good enough shape to come home when I should have been dead or laid up in hospital for many more months battling with it. Right now I am listed as "expected to make a full recovery" instead of wearing out the whole hospital's staff trying to keep up with constant wound dressing and running out of veins to pump with antibiotics.

And, no kidding, while they were doing the very most painful stuff to me, my mind pulled up Vietnam battle scenes, facing 'er down like our boys did. I didn't make it up. It came up unbidden, as though I really had been there with them in spirit... well... because I had been. Even not knowing the half of it at the time, I was with them in spirit and still am. xoxox
