Half of drinkers can’t tell when they’ve reached the drunk driving limit

CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom (StudyFinds.org) — People who drink often know when the alcohol starts to “go to their heads” and they need to stop. However, drunk driving laws set the bar for intoxication much lower than that. Now, a new study finds half of drinkers can’t tell when they’ve reached the limit to legally drive after consuming alcohol.

My general rule of thumb after I decided to cool my heels in my late 20s was exactly one drink. That pretty much insured that I wouldn't get pulled over even for suspicion, and everybody knows the less interaction you have with any cop for any reason is a good thing.
Now, even though I rarely drink any more, I won't have even a single drink outside of my home or if I may have someplace to go. The reason for that is simple: I won't step outside of my house without a gun on my hip and the acceptable BAC for somebody in Tennessee with a firearm in their possession is zero.

  1. You metabolize about one "standard" drink an hour (one 1.5 oz shot of 80 proof or equivalent, more or less- about half an ounce of pure ethanol an hour, depending on age, liver health, etc). Actually, one an hour will build up a bit, but slowly. Ignore that, call it a drink an hour. Limit your consumption to one an hour and you'll be fine indefinitely, or at least as long as the party lasts. Two an hour, you're probably good for a couple hours, maybe three, not four. My usual practice is to drop one at whatever rate I like, then make any following drinks last 45 minutes. At that rate, you're social but won't get blitzed unless the party runs for days.

  3. I don't drink but man was I pissed when they dropped the BAC to .08. I thought the old .10 was too high. The BAC I understand came out in the fifties and was .15 at the time. That sounds about right to me. The .08 just fucks with good people and makes the state a lot of money. My opinion and I'm stickin with it.

  4. I have a two drink limit when I go to dinner or a bar. A man's gotta know his limitations.

  5. I have a 1 drink limit if out because of the exact thing Kenny stated.

PA doesn't have a BAC rule like TN, but I don't need the hassle or possible repercussions if I do have to pull a trigger.

Also I'm usually driving, so its mo betta to be pretty sober.

  6. .08 is way too low. The VAST majority of DUI accidents are caused by people .15 and above. At .08, I'm driving a whole lot better than folks texting and watching videos or just being old.

  7. My rule of thumb from experience is: If you are driving a red Camero on a Friday or Saturday night zero drinks and even then you will get tested.

    1. Kinda similar to me when I was working nights. My route home would take me through deserted downtown at 3 in the morning in a 1964 mostly white Chevy pickup. I was getting pulled over left and right. My personal best was getting stopped 10 nights in a row by different cops, all of them saying they stopped me because "there was an incident involving a truck similar to mine."
It was funny the first 4-5 times it happened, but damn, that shit got old. I ended up going to the cop shop to make a complaint over it.

    2. Police blotters are public record. If there was an "incident" warranty stopping vehicles, it would necessarily be on the blotter. "Good to know, officer, can you share the details so I can keep an eye out or shall I stop by the station tomorrow to check the blotter?"

  9. Most of your shitty drivers test high. The ones who are lower usually have been doing other things. Your alcoholics roll in the high 20’s.

  10. I still wonder what the acceptable BAC is for a cop, undercover, or not.

    1. Falling down drunk is okay unless they shoot somebody, then falling down drunk is okay.

  11. I also think that .08 was seen by states as a way to make some money. But some people who are not regular drinkers should not drive at .08, especially smaller framed females. The just don't metabolize alcohol the same as men.
In Michigan, there is a zero tolerance policy to alcohol and CCW as well. You also cannot carry a gun open or concealed in a bar. Just Thursday night, at 1:30 in the morning, two guys got into a fight, then one pulled a gun and shot the other several times, killing him. It was the bar where I bought my first beer, right down the street from my foundry job. It was called the town tavern then, now it is called MI Bar. They are still looking for the guy who did the shooting. They have pictures of him out, he looks like a real winner.

    1. I can go into a bar or club here with a gun (unless they post it) but I can't drink, nor can I have a beer with my meal anywhere.

  12. If I drink when I go out it is at lunch. Daylight does not show as many car violations such as a light being out. And they seem to be more lenient on speed because every one is out for work. Not just the people returning from happy hour or dinner.

  13. And the other half know it but have reached the point where they don't care.
