Grit and Oyster Shells: Do Your Chickens Need Them?

Unfortunately, a lot of people think that grit and oyster shells are the same things. They are not.

Your hens require both oyster shell and grit. Without it, serious health issues can arise, such as Sour Crop and Brittle Bones.

So now we know that our ladies need oyster shells and grit as additives to their diet, but why do they need them?

  1. Get oyster shells at the Co op, couple bucks for 50 lbs, throw a handful in with their food. Makes good lime additive for your garden, too! More micronutrients than "garden lime" from the big box stores.

  2. When I long hauled the east coast, I stopped at the last granite quarry and picked up crushed granite in 50lb bags palletized, and took them to upstate NY to giant turkey farms. This was the grit they used for the turkeys. They’d been using it for generations. 1 53ft trailer ever week.
