A couple weeks ago I realized my ice scraper went MIA on me so I went to the local parts store to buy a replacement.
They had exactly one. A Rain-X ice scraper. For 5 bucks. Five dollars for a fucking ice scraper.....
I've had a couple chances to use it since then and I have to say, I was actually pretty impressed with it. Something in the design makes it dig deep, then that sucker can flat blow through a quarter inch of ice.
It beats the shit out of a credit card any day.
Speaking of Rain-X, applying that to your windshield at regular intervals will make it a LOT easier to deal with ice. Very often you won't need to scrape your windows at all because the ice won't have formed in the first place.
ReplyDeleteWe had a bad ice storm that left my car covered with at least 1/4" of ice. I could hook a fingernail under the edges of the sheets covering my windows and just pop them off.
It does wear off though, so you need to re-apply it.
I remember when Rain-X first came out, it was great stuff. You only needed to apply it a couple times a year. It was so good that after the windshield wiper motor on my old farm truck went out, I didn't replace it for 2 years.
DeleteThe stuff was so good that they must've redesigned it because they weren't making enough off of it - a bottle would last forever. Now it only lasts for a couple weeks.
Funny, I didn't see a cassette tape case on that list anywhere. Perfect size and that thick plastic really powered through ice. Ah, the good ol' days.
ReplyDeletePlastic scrapers tend to snap around -20°F, but the brush still gets the snow off and a snuff can does decent on ice.
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say I've never seen -20F and never will.
DeleteAny temperature that has a "-" in front of it is not a temperature, it's a death wish!
DeleteNow you've done it! Algore will be coming to your area soon and That Asshole, Jack, will have to be fending off poley barr attacks!
DeleteYou’re missing out… nothing like a 100 degree difference between inside and outside.
DeleteWhen I lived north of Steamboat at 8600', on clear nights my thermomenter would peg at 40 below. Never saw so many stars even sailing.
DeleteFor parking outside nothing beats the Frostblocker to keep the stuff off the windshield. Even covers the wipers. Been using the same one for a few years now, works perfectly and easy.

Never live anywhere that an "ice scraper" is needed.....
ReplyDeleteI usually get me a new dollar scraper at Walmart every year, throw it behind the seat sometime in April, might dig it out to scrape paint over the summer but a new sharp edge does a good job. I keep an old broom on the porch to brush the snow off. My old truck, when the heater core went out I hardly bothered, I just rolled the window down and stuck my head out every so often.

BEST ICE scraper is the inexpensive one from amazon.....OR TEXAS!
ReplyDeleteGuess I'm a fossil I remember when they would give them away. my friend got an old van with one of the old wooden handled brush and scraper combinations that has the name of a long closed lumber yard printed on it !
ReplyDeleteOwn 3 of #5 and have no complaints. The foam handle is nice, and durable. Don't forget to keep your windshield wipers up when parked!
