New Law Will Install Kill Switches In All New Cars

Back in 1998, sci-fi TV series The X-Files aired an episode called “Kill Switch” about an AI gone rogue. Told when the internet was still accessed by most using dial-up modems, it was a fascinating tale of technology run amuck, a message about not handing too much of your life over to the digital world. While it might also seem like a sci-fi tale, soon enough the United States federal government could force automakers to install kill switches authorities can access and use to shut down any newer vehicle.

    1. What a wonderful idea!
Do you suppose we can get it working before Nancy retires?

  3. "It’s time for not only car enthusiasts but also regular Americans to get loud and tell their US Representatives and Senators what they think of laws like these. Obviously, our elected officials don’t care too much about our safety or privacy, so we need to remind them what we expect now and moving forward."

    LOL. Yea, Ok.

    1. It will be like modern cell phones. If you disable the gps chip the cell stops working because the system checks for the chip functioning.

  5. One more reason to own an older vehicle, at least until the label them as the preferred vehicle of DTs.

  6. Reason #192 to get up to jogging 3 miles a day / 3 times a week... a keeping a decent magnetic compass and paper map. Keep that old bicycle in your garage ready to go as well. Of course, my 20 mile commute to work might be a bit of a bear.

  7. The comments on the link are worrying but not surprising. It's the old CCTV meme - "if you don't do anything wrong you have noting yo worry about". So many people just don't get it and don't deserve what little liberty is left.

  8. I'm sure the kill switch will never be abused, and I'm just as sure that hackers aren't already working on a way to mass kill cars during rush hour.

  9. The kill switch has been a fact of life for over ten years. The auto industry calls it a "GPS starter interrupter device", AKA a deadbeat switch. Miss a lease payment, and your car stops running. Doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing - that's it.

Of course the loan company doesn't tell you that such a device exists - but it does. If you have OnStar, you're almost guaranteed to have a kill switch on your car. You won't know it unless you find it somehow.

And, by the way, these kill switch devices can be hacked. For that matter, so can the rest of your car - accelerator, brakes, steering, any of the controls on your car are vulnerable to a hacker. Or a government.

  10. 1984 Toyota Pickup. Carb'd. Just rebuilt the engine, trans, and suspension this past summer. Put all new brake hardware in two years ago.

Should be good for ANOTHER 250K miles.
