Driving on I-80 one day, there was a long string of a cloud, busy spinning around itself, that was staying over the interstate. The rest of the sky was clear.
Thermic conditions the road was warmer than the surrounding areas and so thermals were triggered on the road the cloud forms where the thermal hits the inversion layer. Mac
All day I witnessed that same phenomena but far offshore in the North Pacific. However, what I saw had a very clean edge, not ragged. All day the break was straight above (we were west bound). Pretty cool.
You'd be amazed at how often one shows up at a 'star party' near the end of a severe-clear day and a cloud deck like that will just slide over the sky like an eyelid while one is setting up one's telescope. Maybe it will go away in time to get some observing done, and maybe everybody will just be spending the evening standing around in the field bullshitting (and perhaps finding the occasional 'sucker hole').
