This is our documentary on the development and use of firearms by both the Northern and Southern Armies during the American Civil War --
When the guns fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861, the Union government had about five hundred thousand shoulder arms held in arsenals in Northern states. About eighty percent of these were .69-caliber smoothbores.
The Southern states possessed only about a third as many long guns – many seized from federal arsenals.
Both sides could raise more troops than they could quickly arm, and there was a massive effort to build or buy as many guns as possible. Eventually millions more muskets, rifles, carbines, and revolvers would be delivered to Union and Confederate soldiers between 1861 and 1865.
The Civil War would lead to dramatic advancements in the technical progress and historical record of the American firearm -- and would lead to the dawn of modern warfare.

Times have changed. However, nothing wrong with the basic reading, writing and arithmetic. Science, Civics a must along with the true American history. I get the computer thing but most kids know how to work computers before kindergarten. What I don't like are teachers spewing their personal opinions or political stance.
ReplyDeleteI started watching that video and got hooked. I learned quite a bit. Thank you for the link.
ReplyDelete"Millions more" stands out. Guns, boots, blankets, knives... millions of everything. A lot of money was made with that war.
ReplyDeleteLast year my wife and I visited the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg PA and went to Gettysburg. I was surprised that neither of these museums had a display of the Whitworth Rifle. When I spoke to the curators of both of these museums, they had no knowledge of the rifle. Even this video makes no mention of the rifle. Surprisingly, 2 of these rifles went up for auctions in PA in the past year. Both of these went way past what I wanted to or could afford to spend.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitworth_rifle
For a long time a Confederate sniper w/Whitworth was the illustration header (whatever the fuck it's called) over at WRSA.
