My mom was a registered nurse, graduated in 1949 from St. Joseph's in Memphis. An old timer MD used pure vanilla extract, the real stuff, on 1st degree burns. My mom raised us to put it on a burn immediately after the incident. Second application 20 minutes later. Sure, the alcohol drew the heat out, but there is something going on with vanilla. I've used it all my life, even on second degree burns and have never blistered nor scarred. Relief is within the hour. My wife and kids swear by it now as well. Wish I had the recipe for her mother's drawing salve. That stuff was gross but worked, full draw was within 24 hours.

I had an incident several years ago where I grabbed a hot fajita pan handle a minute after taking it out of the oven. I had forgotten about it, grabbed it with my bare hand and instantly regretted it. Quick thinking had me dunk my hand in a glass of ice water for about 20 minutes. Later applied aloe vera, then stuck it back into ice water. My hand should have been royally blistered and fucked, but there was no mark on it.
DeleteHaving spent time in my life as a welder I always kept packets of soy sauce from chinese take out in my tool box. Hand and lower arm burns were common cuz it always seemed at some point you forgot you just welded that. Rip open a few of those soy sauce packets, pour 'em over the burn, and then soak a cloth or rag or towel in soy sauce and wrap the burn. Took the heat right out, never blistered.
