One of the greatest concerts ever.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think about it, I am amazed that a group of Canadians were so well versed in events of the Civil War. Levon sings about Stoneman's cavalry and May 10th. Not made up, not just a song. Real life. Touches my soul.
When our family drove across the country in 1972, we had 8 tracks from Cream, Procol Harem, and The Band. Well, Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck too. A great think about 8 tracks is they'd keep playing all by themselves. Even CD players don't do that, I think. Those 8 tracks got wore out, especially The Band.
Anyone who talks crap about The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is dumb because they don't understand. That makes them willfully dumb because they choose not to understand.
Levon was from the south.
DeleteMarvelous.
ReplyDeleteSaw them in Atlanta with Bob Dylan in about '65. I didn't know any better. I just thought it was a band, I didn't know it was "The Band".
ReplyDelete31:00 Georgia on My Mind . . . had never heard their rendition, Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest bands ever!
ReplyDeletePretty cool to have seen Dylan perform with both The Band and, later, with Tom Petty.
ReplyDeleteThe Weight is just one of those songs I'll listen to anywhere, anytime.

It’s interesting that “The Band” has been touted to be the most authentic purveyors of Americana music are all Canadians except for the drummer, Levon Helms.
