Massad Ayoob looks at four different angles of shoulder holster positions

Shoulder Holsters have been around for a long time. Although they aren't as popular today they still have their place. Massad Ayoob offers this guide to four different Shoulder Holster angles and gives you the pros and cons of each. If you are looking into shoulder holsters and wonder which style is right for you, this is the perfect place to start.

I'm not a big fan of shoulder holsters. With my skinny-ass frame,  they're uncomfortable as hell and not at all concealable, yet back in the 1980s when they were a little more popular, I knew people that swore by them.

  1. Early (80s) Bianchi Phantom vertical shoulder holster for my full-size 1911.
Comfy, discreet under a light jacket. Easy access when seated. YMMV.

  2. I've often thought of the utility of the shoulder holster set up but alas, my skinny frame as well.

  4. Mr. Ayoob is one of the finest gentleman you will ever met (I've met him). Very smart and articulate and absolutely NO B.S. And you would NOT ever want him to be shooting at you. He's good.

  5. I've owned several shoulder holsters and got rid of every one of them, they just don't work for me. The K Null one is one I want to try for when I'm driving. Ayoob is intelligent, a good speaker and I've been told he's a great trainer. He did the police reserve thing for a variety of reasons. Honestly, he's always come across as more of a me guy to me. That's fine, I just like lower key us and we guys to train with.

  6. I wear shoulders for my bug guns . Only when I'm feeling ornery . And church . I like having a real big gun for church . If I have to bust a cap in the Lords House I only want to bust once .

  7. Shoulder holsters are dumb and dangerous....you can't unholster your gun without flagging everybody from directly behind you all the way around to your intended target. They break one of the rules of gun safety by pointing your gun at things you don't wish to destroy. I have never understood why you would utilize a holster system that forces you to flag your own body (arm or hand) in the draw stroke.

  8. a few years back in Backwoods Home magazine, mr.Ayoob said if someone knocks on your door and simply SAYS they are a cop, you need to surrender immediately.

    no thanks.

  9. I haven't worn one of those in a long time. My very 1st paycheck I received was spent on the same holster Anon 5.30 mentioned above, a vertical leather holster for my Ruger 6 1/2" Blackhawk. I later let my Brother use the same holster for his Ruger 6 7/8" Target Mark II.

I also had a horizontal under the arm Uncle Mikes cordura for my Star PD auto / Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8" Blackhawk (same holster fit both pistols, go figure) that was really convenient. Underneath a M65 jacket, made it easy and fast to access.

Worn outside wearing a T-shirt, though, the cordura rubbed my inner bicep when I had to work. After a while, I stopped using it.

  10. my colt .45 likes to be with me when I wear a sports coat or sweatshirt. In my opinion nothing better..big guns do not like small holsters.
