Interesting. I am probably wrong but I thought digging even archeological was not permitted on the battle field. I do recall, I think, back in the eighties they had a big brush fire. Archeologist were able to scan ground as they never had before. I recall them finding bullets and by bore scarring were able to trace at least the weapon throughout the battle. I believe I read all that in Smithsonian back in the 80's.
