On top of the great shows & concerts(got gassed at a Tull event)I'd head over there 3 or 4 times/week(I lived 10 minutes away) and run the stairs although nothing like that guy-fabulous workout.
#6 sawstop - amazing tech. it uses an explosive to blast the spinning blade out of the way if it contacts flesh, before damage is done to the operator. microseconds I think.
its expensive but cheaper than the ride in an ambulance and/or most medical deductables. about $2500 for a good cabinet saw. worth every penny.
I know several woodworkers who are missing digits.
I worked as a helper for a seven fingered cabinet maker when i was fresh out of high school. I think of him every time I'm near a power saw of any type.
I once worked with a guy nicknamed Three Fingers because he had cut off two digits with a table saw. After I retired he became known as Two Fingers after he tried to cut a brick with a SkilSaw. He later passed away when he drove a 90,000 pound log loader off a road and was crushed to death.
To say he was accident prone would be an understatement. To say he wasn't too bright would be more accurate.
New blade and new safety part. When it goes off, it will actually chip a couple of teeth off the saw blade. And the safety pack has to be replaced, around $100 bucks, I think.
A guy used to know ran a chop saw onto his hand one night in his shop as he was making some cabinets for his home. After the surgeon got done, that hand was about 1" shorter than the other one. It wasn't much use either.
I'd LOVE to have a Saw Stop! I've got a 1951 3hp Rockwell/Delta Unisaw that'll cut through anything - including body parts. As I get older and my vision and judgment gets worse, I think about getting one more and more. I just don't have a spare $3000!
#5 - I guess the 5 second rule applies here too ...
Quick aside. I've seen in the past when a child falls down or bumps something, the parent / adult freaks out and runs to child to check for injuries. The child then cries harder because of the attention by the adult. I've seen some parent's teach their kids not to cry by telling them 'Why are you crying - you aren't hurt' type of feed back. Kid's tears are way less in those cases.
I've also seen cases where the ONLY thing the child hears when they're hurt and crying is "Shut that up or I'll give you a reason to cry! You ain't hurt!". They, too, cry less, but they never forget the lack of love and concern.
My 2nd child, roughly 4 months old - able to sit a bit but not much else... Finished changing diaper or whatever and put her on the nearby bed, where she happily sat up. I did whatever had to be done and then sat down on the bed next to the WeeOne. That was enough to launch her over the edge headed noggin first for the floor. I somehow managed to catch her before she hit said floor. Hadn't moved that quickly and surehandedly since playing baseball as a teenager. Never did mention it to The Wife.
6 sawstop works off the same technology that allows your finger to type on a smartphone. Small electrical impulse from the body. A couple years ago the cartridges were $85 and we always keep a couple spares around. The blade is largely useless once it triggers. Had a headphone cord touch the blade once Didn’t damage the $10 headphones but cost me a blade and a cartridge
#8 red rocks colorado, my home state.

The improved version won't destroy the whole saw when it has to 'blow'. Just maybe the blade itself and the part holding it.

DeleteCommon sense is also "worth every penny."

DeleteI'm curious how it detects/triggers. The retraction mechanism is probably the easy part, probably something like air bag technology.
Delete#1 "I meant to do that!" (Almost plausible.)
