  2. My Dad commanded the 3rd SQN when the Blackhorse deployed to RVN in 1966. I still have the small statue of the black horse used as the model for the Blackhorse patch. My first assignment after commissioning in 1973 was to the 3rd Herd at Bad Hersfeld, FRG. Most of those "original" Blackhorse troopers have passed on. Before they deployed, Dad went to the FMC main office/factory somewhere in CA and described the armor protection they needed for their M113s. The end product was not delivered until they were in RVN. But with their arrival and mounting, the Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle (ACAV) was "born". LTC(R) Paul Peterson
