Washington gas stations run out of gas, add extra digit in anticipation of $10 dollar prices

Gas stations across the US are running out of fuel and in anticipation of an increase in gas prices, gas stations in the state of Washington are reportedly reprogramming pumps to include double-digit numbers in "price per gallon" as the current trend could put prices over $10.00.

  1. I'm so old I remember when they added the dollar digit in anticipation of gas going over a dollar. I was working in New Jersey at the time and experienced gas lines and "No Gas" signs. My future wife lived in the Atlanta area and the only sign she saw of a shortage was that stations were closed on Sunday.

    1. I remember when those old pumps couldn't read a dollar a gallon some stations simply cut their posted price in half when it hit over $1.00/gal. There was a sign on the pump warning that the price charged would be twice what was displayed.

    2. Others had "$1." written on a piece of paper and pasted to the left of the number wheels. Either way, something had to be added to the gear train inside. Everything was mechanical in those days, and I don't know how they'd change the gear ratio every time the price went up or down one cent.

Electronic fuel dispensers came out in the 1980's (I once worked for a company that made the circuit cards for Schlumberger), but many small town gas stations kept the old mechanical ones into the 2000's. Reprogramming the electronics must be much easier than changing the gear trains, but most of the displays look like they were built with electrodes for each symbol on the screen, so there is a fixed number of digits. I don't know how they can add a digit unless they either use "$1" stickers again or re-purpose the advertising screen in most pumps (like a small flat-screen TV) to show the $10+ amounts.

  2. If voting was honest then there's no way any democrat could ever get reelected with double digit gas.

  4. I’m presently working for my customer from Washington state. They purchased a million and a quarter lake house here in Arley on the lake. I’m rebuilding all the decks and a new pavilion. They called me Saturday to get set to order the materials and tell me tell be here in July. They called me Monday morning to confirm all materials and to tell me they have put their home up for sale there in King co. They said their moving here permanently. I’m wondering if they’ll ever get out?

  5. Crap, they might as well raise it to $20 or $50 a gallon, At $8 a gallon or close to that the trucks are gonna shut down and the rest is history. The entire economy shuts down, fuel delivery won't matter, nobody will be able to afford anything, it's all dependent upon the cost of transportation. Now that in our infinite wisdom, we have allowed to erected offals to send all forms of manufacturing & production too distant realms. And unless you can grow it in your garden, or make it at home with materials you have on hand. You ain't gone get nothin.

  6. $4.999 here for premium and the last time I filled my can there it was 4.3 for premium. It's obscene. Probably cheaper in town but also longer trip.
If I were super rich, I would install my own gas station on the farm or at least fill a few IBC totes and park em when gas was like $2/gal.
