  1. #2: this is one of many similar videos I’ve seen online. Is this an overlooked malfunction of the dumping actuator? Is there some valid reason why a driver would lift the trailer bed while moving along a route that is free of overhead obstructions? Or is this plain driver stupidity?

    1. On many designs, once wear sets in, going over bumps can lift the bed 1/2" or more when down & locked. This turns on the driver cab alarm. As the driver can do nothing about what is effectively a false alarm, they ignore the alert.

In the rare case where something has caused bed to raise, the results can be quite.... "special".

    2. the operator is not smart enough to check his mirrors . You ought to keep your eyes moving when driving a big truck. Check the gauges , check mirrors scan ahead ,repeat . Part of being a pro is knowing what is going on around you, situational awareness they call it . Its a useful habbit

    3. The driver is an idiot for not checking his mirrors and was probably sleep deprived or high on bennies. On the other hand he could be getting his knob gobbled by the lot lizard he picked up.

    4. Driver stupidy. Those big trucks, it's a miracle there isn't more wrecks and calamities. The driver has to be ever vigilant with his machine. They run over crap all the time and don't feel it. Probably felt this, though

    5. Driver left the power take off engaged ( the pto drives the hydraulic pump) , and it overrode the valve that controls the cylinder at extended high rpms driving down the road...
Even if it was a malfunction of the equipment,
he also forgot to keep checking his mirrors...

    6. Maybe it was the driver's last day at that job and said to hisself ' Fookit - let's see what happens ! '

    10. Look around at the conditions. Snow fall, roads treated. That creates a lot of spray which obscures vision. I've had it happen many times where the mirrors get so covered I couldn't see anything behind me. In conditions like that you hold the lane.
So it is entirely possible he couldn't see and had a false sense of security.

  2. Driver stupidity, they don't pay attention or don't have a bed up light in the cab and just start driving after dumping their load. I was taught to always visually check that the bed is down no matter what the indicator says

  5. You wouldn't lift the tipping trailer by choice, about the only time you would raise it without wishing to unload would be to run any water off that might be sitting in the tarpaulin trailer cover whilsty stationary.
On most vehicles of that type the pto (power take off) hydraulics for the ram are not engaged whilst travelling, the driver must have left the pto engaged and not realised the lever was in the lift position, however why he didn't see the trailer body lifting in the mirror is a mystery.
Once again the way these things were fitted in the past was better,.
On older trucks (in England at least) when you released the air park brake it would automatically throw the pto out, this was so the pto couldn't be left engaged, ensuring such disaster couldn't happen and to protect the pto which on such a vehicle would not be designed to run permanently.
