The worst day fishing beats the best day working - most of the time

STUART, Fla — A 70-year-old woman was stabbed by the bill of a 100-pound sailfish that leapt out of the water and attacked her as her companions were trying to reel it in on a boat near the Florida coast, authorities said.

  1. "Attack" is not really the right word. I have fished offshore and billfish will make strong runs and high jumps trying to free themselves - randomly coming into the boat is NOT unheard of. When there is a good fish on, everyone on the boat needs to be alert and paying attention to what the fish is doing. She was the victim of an unfortunate accident and maybe a little negligence, not an attack.

    2. Good point Birdchaser, 'green' fish are definitely more dangerous.

  4. I knew a man who was pulling in a swordfish while he sat in a wood dinghy. The fish came straight up and pierced the floor of the boat. He called his brother to come over on the big boat to help take the fish and rescue him from the sinking dinghy.

  5. Fishing is a deadly sport.
I once got stabbed by a catfish at city park trying to land that sucker.
Was 12 then, threw that offending fish past the moat into the bear cage at the zoo on the way home.
Living very dangerously back in the day. haha Catfish stab way more people than you would think possible.
