I've got an old Apple iPod that I've had since the early 2000s that I use every time I mow. It's loaded with classic Country and Rock, basically the same shit I post here on Friday evenings, but without the newer artists.
Listening to music when I'm on a mower for 4 hours beats the hell out of listening to the voices in my head. Gets me in less trouble, too.
So I spend a lot of my time maintaining the land my wife and I recently move to. Bush hogging, cutting trees, fixing fence lines etc. To say I need my music is an understatement. The wife says the ear plugs are going to permanently grow into my head. Like you, I have classic rock from the 60's, 70's and 80's in my ipod. BUT I found something better. I have iheartradio on my phone and there's a station called "that 70's station" and that's all I've been listening to the last few months. Not only do they have some deeper cuts off of older albums, but there's way more variety than I have in my ipod (with over 4000 songs). They'll play Elvis, Deep Purple, and early Guns and Roses all in the same hour. It's a great station FWIW.
ReplyDeleteIf only I had a smartphone.....
DeleteSeriously, I don't know what I'm going to do when the iPod goes south.
super easy solution--look on Amazon for a " SanDisk MP3 with microSD card slot (SDMX26-008G-G46K) " ...you can load that sucker up with all you can imagine using the sdcard. ...using them for over a decade.
DeleteI concur, but in 5 years or so the battery dies and they aren't replaceable.
Deletea US$28 cost to replace is not a big deal every 05 yrs. Also, mine (plural) have been going strong for a decade
DeleteNo, not a big deal, and hopefully production continues. My backup is a smartphone without phone service, and I just use the Android
DeleteCan't find my 8 track, but then again I can't find my '72 Beetle it was installed in.
ReplyDeleteYou need to join the future and get with the cassettes

Best thing about yardwork-just don't get so into the music you step on a rake.
ReplyDeleteIf you've got CD's, there are an unbelievable amount of portable players still available, several for under $30..
Also, I'm not sure what the monthly fee is, but I love Spotify; you can make as many lists of favorites you want.

My IPod battery is shot. I have a Boze it fits in to play, but the speaker is going out. So all I can do is but it on the Boze, turn the volume down and put in earbuds... I have some great songs/albums on that IPod! Can't hook it up to ITunes, that hard drive crapped out and moved out years ago. New ITunes will take all the music off that I put on, unless it was purchased from Apple... So it is only a piece of history now. But the IPods were selling for a grand a few years back.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that's correct about the Itunes Anon. I've got over 4K songs in my itunes program and have bought ZERO of the music. It's either music I loaded from CDs or pirated (shhh) but I have the most up to date version of iTunes and all my music is on that. I just do a "drag and drop" of the old music into the itunes folder. It's worth looking into even though my newer cars, blue tooth players etc. don't require itunes and I can just have all the songs on a little thumb drive.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I spoke with Apple many years ago and they told me I would lose everything, as it would reset my IPod... Guess they didn't want me to know otherwise...
DeleteI have a first gen iPod that I keep plugged in the power strip on my tool box. I have external speakers for a computer plugged up to it. The wireless and speakers do not work and I haven't been able to get it to connect to a computer in well over a decade but it still puts out good music.
ReplyDeleteStill have my 1st edition ipod classic 30gb, still works well though the battery is shot, stays plugged in on the shop stereo which is a vintage JVC ElKameleon head unit feeding 2 1k watt PA amps, each supplying dual 15" double stack pa speakers, and a 70v audio system from a prison with 4 big bullhorns on the outside of the shop, even have the wardens desk mic. Can hear that old ipod 1/2 mile away lol
ReplyDeleteI've got an original Walkman cassette player that still works and a couple dozen cassette's that work just fine. I also have a Walkman radio that works.

I have an ipod nano that still works, or did the last time I tried it. I can't see that thing ever breaking as it has no moving parts. As long as it can hold a charge and doesn't get wet it should work. Thing is, it can't do anything my phone doesn't do, and my Pixel 3 has an actual headphone jack in it so no dead headphone batteries for me.
ReplyDeleteI was cleaning up and came across old CDs not long ago. They've been sitting in a box in the basement (3 basements technically, they follow me when I move) for a very long time now, hundreds of them. I've either ripped them or downloaded the equivalent, and I haven't had anything that could even play a CD in I can't remember how long (well, I might have a portable CD player in a drawer somewhere.)
I do still have an LP player. I inherited my dad's old Empire, which is apparently worth a fortune. It could use a new belt and cartridge, but it still works. Vinyl seems to be making a comeback these days too.
I bet the voices in your head are more entertaining.
ReplyDeleteDon't know about entertaining, but sometimes they're more interesting.
