New Tennessee law says 3rd graders can be held back if they don't pass state reading test

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Thousands of third graders across Tennessee are at risk of getting held back this school year because of a new law.

That law says students will need to repeat the third grade if they do not pass the state reading test at the end of the year. It passed in 2021 as part of the state’s effort to reverse pandemic learning loss, but this is the first year it is being implemented.

  2. Geez, this is how it used to be done when I was growing up. Fail your competency tests and/or really bad grades in math and English would get you held back a year.

    1. Anyone can become president don't you know? So don't hold them back, even let them skip a few years and the left will fall in love with them.

  3. Waiting on the outrage because kids shouldn't have to know how to read. Make them learn to read cursive too.

    1. It'll be a "white supremacist" racial thing attacking the disadvantaged black victims of the white dominated education system.

  4. Just like it was when I was in the third grade...

  5. Yeah. Back in the 50's and 60's we had to pass all classes to graduate to the next. Maybe have to do a summer school class to pass. If you failed that, first your dad kicked your ass, then you got held back a year.

    1. I almost got held back from 3rd Grade because I could not read to minimal standards. One nice summer school session and I was reading at 5th Grade levels and just kept reading more and more.

But there are actual teachers out there who say forcing kids to read is wrong. Fuuuuuckk.

  7. Had teachers been doing thier jobs instead of the bullshit they have been slinging every kid of course could read before the third grade. Hence, if your kid is in the third grade and can't read then you might want to ask, Just what has my kid been taught? BLM, Whites are trash and if you say yer queer you get a rainbow sticker on your forehead?

  8. I see nothing wrong with making sure the kids can pass a simple reading test, if they can't repeat the grade, like we would have done, back in the day...of course, it won't take too long for the race card to be thrown in, saying how the poor black kids, with no father, can't possibly perform at the same level as the white kids...sad, but just watch...if a 3rd grader can't read, what's he gonna do in 4th grade, simply get passed on? Ponderous, freakin ponderous...

    1. "No father" blahblahblah. Mothers living in the bar or crack house. And yes there are a lot of real shitty, worthless parents out there, but, The kids can actually work in school or stay after school to learn to read. And they will if they know that they will be held back.

  10. Wow. You mean failing kids can be held back? IT should be that way always...for every grade. Just like it used to be.

  12. Should all kids that are behind have to repeat a grade? Not always.
My grades in my junior year in high school were awful, but my teachers knew what the horrifying circumstances were at my home, so they let me go on to my senior year, conditionally. I graduated with the highest score of the school. (my 'high school' was NOT an American high school).
One size fits alas does not work, though I am sure flexible rules can be abused, you know, because of 'equity'.

  13. Things just aren't the same as they were as little as 15 years ago. Good in theory, but not applicable anymore. School districts across the country are graduating academically retarded students because if they didn't the logjam would be ruinous.

  14. Hell, the way things are going we might want to see if the teachers can pass it. They seriously need to be tested on basic biology. Show them a picture and see if they can correctly decide if it's male or female.

  15. A friend, who is an elementary school teacher, told me several years ago that they were not allowed to fail more than 2 students a year in their class.

  16. This is a great program started in Florida a few years ago. 70% of kids who can't read at grade level by 4th grade drop out of school. Now is the state of Tennessee going to provide extra reading training for these children?

  17. Better idea.....provide a rudimentary reading class in summer school and if they pass, then they can still advance to 4th grade....of course, they would still have the choice to just say fuck it and repeat 3rd grade....

  18. finally, some common sense. now go one step further and renew contract/fire teachers based on percentage of kids held back.

  19. If the child goes to public school and can't read by the 2nd grade fire the teacher.

  20. I grew up with a kid who had to repeat the third grade (or maybe the second.) This would have been early 80s. I always think of him when I hear that Chris Rock bit: "Do you know how DUMB you have to be to get held back in the first grade? What's 4+4? Uh, Jello?"

He actually went on to be quite successful and was hired as a sportscaster on a national network. Didn't survive a recent purge, so hopefully he invested well, because people in that business rarely have much in the way of real life skills.
