Santa Monica nursing home tells wrong patient’s family about death

A mix-up of residents at a convalescent home in Santa Monica has upset a woman’s family after they were told she was dead, only to find she’d been confused with another patient.

A nurse at Santa Monica Convalescent Center — which is changing its name to Sunset Park Healthcare — told the family of 83-year-old Isabel Valencia that she had died. However, it was a different resident who had died, according to Valencia’s son-in-law Mike Fanous.

  1. I was 2000 miles from home on a hunting trip and went to use my credit card to purchase fuel. The card was declined, so I pulled out another and it was also declined. I paid cash and pulled out of the bay and called customer service. I was informed by both customer service departments that I was deceased. Took them about a week and numerous calls to correct the problem. I am one of the few that can say "Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated". No one could tell me how I died.....

  2. On the night my father died I was at home working on a project. At about 9pm I got a call from the nursing home where he had been for about three months. The woman on the phone stated matter-of-factly, "We went in to take your father's vitals but we couldn't find any." I had to quiz her with two more questions before she admitted that he had died. It was tough enough finding out that dad was gone, but even tougher when they tried to camouflage the reality of his death.
