That's it, whip him to his feet

An exhausted carriage horse collapsed during the evening rush hour in Manhattan on Wednesday — lying on the asphalt while his driver repeatedly struck him and ordered him to “get up.”

The animal’s knees buckle in video footage as the driver jerks the reins and slaps the horse in an attempt to make it stand on 9th Avenue and West 45th Street in Hell’s Kitchen.

  1. N.Y.C. Is a cesspool unfit for human habitation, let alone making a poor horse live there. Talk about a living hell .

  2. Back in the 70's when being an American meant something, An aunt of mine-a diplomats wife- witnessed a similar beating on a street in Katmandu. She walked to a pair of cops minding traffic at a nearby intersection and demanded they have a word with the horseman. The cops followed the old American woman back to the scene and proceeded to thrash the horseman within an inch of his life while the horse watched. Maybe this is the best way to instruct people.

  4. I've seen amish do this too.
it's not a NYC Thang. it's an ignorance thing.
if a horse or large livestock animal goes "down",; it means it's too late for treatment. the human literally worked that horse to death.

  5. Who owns the horses? Whoever it is should get charged with animal cruelty and the driver should be barred for life from ever working with animals. Needless to say hate seeing animals suffer.

    1. I lost my favorite mare to heat exhaustion and the resulting colic a couple of years ago. She was 11; in the pasture with my other horses, and for whatever reason she wasn’t drinking water overnight. The old adage is true; you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.
Once they go down it is imperative that you get them up…which is exactly what the driver was trying to do, and is what the NYPD folks did when they got there. I’ve never seen a horse drink water while laying down-to the best of my knowledge (35 years of riding and owning) to get water in them they’ve got to be upright. At no point during the video that I watched was the driver cruel to his horse-I whacked my mare ten times harder than he did to get her up and get her moving and hopefully clear the intestinal blockage.
There were a lot of self-proclaimed “experts” standing by in the article, such as the old lady who “grew up with horses” and thinks that they can’t drink with a bit in their mouth, or the bystander thinking you can get them to drink while lying down.
The events leading up to the horse going down in the first place are certainly up for investigation; the vitriol placed on the driver’s handling of it is, in my opinion, unwarranted.

    2. overheated horses that drink water will tie up.
      which can kill them.
this is why mules won't drink when hot. better survival skills.

  6. A horse will work itself to death for you. Don't let it. This guy needs a really good caining.

    1. That's why I prefer mules. They're too smart to work themselves to death.
I can't abide horses, the crazy bastards, but I'd whip a man's ass if I saw such mistreatment. The fact that I'm old and crippled up would just be adding insult to the injury he earned.

  7. It’s not cruelty to do everything possible to get a down horse to get up. Lying down is very dangerous for horses; their organs don’t work properly unless they are upright. Whatever else the horse needs—water shade, medication—first you have to get him on his feet.
That said, NYC streets are no place for a horse, especially in summer. Between the humid heat and the hard asphalt, it’s a punishing environment.
