OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Quail Springs Mall in Oklahoma City was evacuated Saturday afternoon after patrons believed they heard gunshots, but police later learned that the pops did not come from a gun.
An Oklahoma City Police Department official confirmed to KFOR that the mall was evacuated and that the incident was initially investigated as an active shooter situation.
Except people who don't handle firearms (even doing range time), don't know the difference in sounds. Worse, Muffking, is the breakdown of law and order and civilized society will contiue to make people fearful and jumpy. -LG
LG, it's not just people that don't handle guns, a lot of it has to do with the environment. I can hear gunfire outside and can tell it's gunfire and most of the time the caliber, but when I step inside with a door between me and it, it's a different sound and with a window between me and the gunfire, it's another completely different sound, more of a flat thud. Even outside, there can be a difference. My AR sounds louder on my own property which is hemmed in with trees and hills than it does at the range which is flat, wide and open.
I was at the mall with my family when it happened. We were on our way out of Dillard's into the mall on the second floor overlooking the kids play area when all I see is parents grabbing their kids and running in all directions. I didn't hear any shots but I understood immediately what was happening. We did an about face and headed back into the department store and started jogging for the exit and then to our car, telling everyone we passed what was happening. Halfway to the exit, the intercom came on and the only words coming from it was "Active Shooter". There was about 30 people at the doors trying to get out and amazingly no one was being aggressive or trampling anyone (I have some faith in humanity again). My wife and youngest told me later that they did hear shots. It was pretty surreal but we kept level heads and I'm glad it turned out to be nothing.
Gun shots are very distinctive and people should know the difference between confetti pops and actual gunfire.
