SEATTLE - If you’ve ever been on a long highway road trip or absorbed in a good book, chances are you’ve entered a state of "dissociation," where you’re transported into another world and have stopped paying attention to things around you — even if only for a bit.
A team of researchers at the University of Washington wondered if this same mental process occurs when people scroll on social media endlessly, and why they may feel out of control after having spent so much time on these apps.
I finally broke down and bought a 'smart' phone about a year ago. Mostly because of mom's appointments and the calendar reminder. I have to say, it has been a big help. But that is all I use it for and for making calls. Prescriptions are much easier since they text me the info and I do not have to make a phone call and all that. They even contact the doctor for a refill. Like I said, a big time saver. Since I manage my own, my cat's and my mother's prescriptions it really helps. Yes, I have a cat that is on two prescriptions. Has been for 7 years. I do not go on the internet and other sites. A waste of time. I have my computer for that. But the being transported into another world they talk about, I only experience that when I am reading a book. :)
ReplyDeleteItz been going on for over 70 years folks!
ReplyDeleteBefore there were Apps, there was TV turning minds to mush!
That's why they called it the Idiot Box and the Boob Tube!
Which is why I never got into the TV habit.
DeleteI'm 63 years old and I bet I've watched less TV in my entire life than most people do in a single year.
.It's the "SP" phenomenon, We live in a world of Smart Phones and Stupid People
ReplyDeleteSheeeiiit. Stoned or straight, drunk or sober, who *hasn't* zoned out while driving on the highways? On autopilot for a few miles and wake up to find yourself in a whole new ZIP code. LOL
ReplyDeleteBeen there. Most of the time with a slight buzz and don't remember half the drive.
DeleteYep. Wound up on a deserted Galveston beach after drinking tequila one night. Woke up on the beach trying to figure out how I got there. Wasn’t bleeding from my rectum that I could tell and it wasn’t sore. And no sticky white residue on my face or in my mouth so that was a plus. Once I realized I hadn’t been violated I got into the car to see if there was graffiti on me. No sharpie drawings of vulgar depictions or sayings either. Overall I guess it was a fun night but I’ll never know. Still to this day I’ll only drink one shot of tequila if it is offered.

I'm The Slime by Frank Zappa
ReplyDeleteVerse 1]
I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I'm the tool of the government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you
[Verse 2]
I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I'm the best you can get
Have you guessed me, yet?
I'm the slime oozin' out
From your TV set
[Verse 3]
You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help, no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold
[Interlude]
That's right, folks
Don't touch that dial
[Chorus]
Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin' room floor
I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go
I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin' room floor
I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go
Not letting me post with my Google account but for what it's worth I identify as Sheik Yerbooti, another FZ reference.
it's also what happens when you are a victim of spousal or domestic abuse
ReplyDeletenaw, having a good book to tune out the bs around is a good thing. Having your head up your ass is watching TV or playing video games or working for the socialist democrat party.
ReplyDeleteYeah..what TRIB wrote. Definitely agree with that.
ReplyDeleteI wrote code for my entire professional life. A good part of that time, I was "out there" in a place that I could only reach when I was working a tough problem. Time does not exists there; hunger and thirst are not pressing. I approach that state now with a chainsaw in my hands.
