Deal averting railroad strike has potential to fall apart

The White House-brokered agreement to avert a railroad strike has the potential to fall apart, threatening widespread economic disruption right before the midterm elections.

Rail workers are set to vote on the tentative deal reached between unions and railroads Thursday morning. If any of the 12 rail unions fail to ratify a new contract, nearly 125,000 rail workers could be headed for a strike.

Ron Kaminkow, an organizer at Railroad Workers United, which represents rank-and-file railroaders, said that there’s “a lot of anger, confusion and hostility” toward the new agreement, which many workers feel is intentionally vague.

  1. Also at least one Union said it would take 3-4 weeks to get agreement to the rank and file. And then if they vote it down you have a 30 day "cooling off" period before a strike happens. Meaning a strike would be oh so conveniently delayed until after mid-terms.

  2. If it involves Unions, you can bet it's a boondoggle. I learned early in life, from my dear dad, that Unions were useless, corrupt, nefarious organizations of dipshits. When the company my dad was working for decided to move South from NJ to rid itself of the Unions, they went straight to my father and asked if he wanted to run the new plant in Georgia. The words hell yeah, couldn't get out of his mouth fast enough. From the time I was a young teenager, to the time my dad passed when I was 26, he would gladly give you his opinion of Unions without even being asked.

    1. The only thing worse than a rail union is the railroad itself....
