How Many Gun Magazines Do You Really Need?

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- “How many mags do you need?” is an often-asked, albeit somewhat pointed, question by wives to their husbands when a gun collection is seemingly growing out of control. And to the non-gun-person, it seems like a straightforward one – but it’s definitely not.

  1. Answer: As many as you can afford and store. Duh.

  2. When Bonnie and Clyde got whacked, he had 3 BAR's and 100 loaded magazines. I think that's a good start.

  5. The mark I tend to aim for is 10 mags per gun. Some I have less, cost and availabilty drives that. I’d like a few more ruger mini 14 mags but the genuine ruger mags are $$$.

    1. Ruger factory mags- worth the extra bucks. Others MAY work but I wouldn't count on it.
      Test 'em anyway.
I've had excellent results w/ Chip McCormick 1911 mags. Sometimes the slide stop tab on the follower needs a little tweak.
15 rd. USGI M1 Carbine mags generally work best. I don't trust the 30 rd. mags.

    2. TW- I have 2 mini 14’s and 17 mags, of which 12 are Ruger. Plastic knockoffs aren’t reliable but I have a couple of metal unbranded ones that are ok. For my 45’s carry mags are chip mccormick or wilson combat. Decades ago I wanted to upgrade my bare bones springfield GI 1911 and ordered some chip mccormick parts. I was having problems fitting the safety. I called the company and chip mccormick himself got on the phone and walked me through it. All this has reminded me, I only have 3 mags for my new Girsan Hi-power clone, gotta go do some shopping.

  6. Well, for high power matches, I usually have 4 available plus a single shot one. When the Floyd riots hit Trenton NJ last year, and were threatening to come across the river into PA, I had every semi-auto loaded and almost every magazine I owned filled and next to the rifle they went into. Fortunately, at least 20 cops from the town and surrounding areas stood on the Trenton Makes Bridge and stopped anyone from crossing that seemed like a threat. I wasn't going to stand by and let them burn me out.

    1. I lived in Lawrenceville, just north of Trenton, for the longest 4 years of my life, before returning to the free South. I used to cross the Trenton Makes bridge to buy cheap Pennsylvania smokes after NJ raised the prices to $6 a pack in the early 2000s.

  8. Ah dunno? Whenever I went to the corner store to pick up a quart of milk, I used to look at the magazine rack and pick up one or two of that month's gun magazines 'n when I got home, the wife used to complain, "Just how many gun magazines do you need?"

  9. Considering they are expendables........and considering some "smart" Democrats believe once the bullets run out, the magazine is no longer good...... I'll let you determine the number....

  10. Regardless of how many - number them. That way if you have a gag, you know where to look

  11. I've read that the recommended standard combat load for the M-16 is 300 rounds or ten loaded 30 round mags. If I owned an AR-15, for planning purposes I'd probably have a minimum of double that many mags plus five additional spares for mags that go pffft, assuming no spare mag parts for repairs. I've also read that soldiers (I'm using "soldiers" as a general term here) have carried double the recommended combat load in recent deployments.

If I owned any handguns, I'd probably go with T-Sgt Joe's recommendation above.

Anecdotally, I've also read that "you can never have enough ammo and also enough mags to load the ammo into." However, there are budgets to consider when enough is enough. ;-))

    1. The only way you can have too many loaded mags and ammo, is if you're on fire or drowning...or if you have bad back, legs, whatever.

  12. What the general public doesn't seem to understand about having beaucoup de mags, 100+ 30 rounders, is that not all of them are for me. When shit goes down they are there to be passed out to all the other like minders that may not have been so fortunate in acquiring mags.

  13. Magazines are like both guns and ammo. The only time you have too much/many is when you are on fire or drowning.

  14. The author of the article says the basic answer is 3 to 5. He's kidding, right? How many magazines do you really need? How many guns do you really need? How much ammo do you really need? How much money do you really need in your bank account? My answer to all the above is "a shitload" or "a fuck-ton." Whichever is more...

  15. I was given a little cheep .22 pistol. It came with one mag. I decided that any pistol needs at least two mags. The only magazine I could find was half the price that the gun would sell for. I bought it as there are no more. Manufacture went out of business.

  16. Well, if I had my druthers, I'd say none. Belt fed, baby. Belt fed.

  17. Magazines are expendable. They wear out long before the piece does. If you buy a $600 has gun, you should buy$300

  18. In magazines.... and that's just your baseline....

  19. You can never have too many. Sheet, I got a whole stack of over 100 Gun magazines. Some are from the NRA others I bought at Barnes & Noble.

  20. Magazines are consumable items. They wear out, get damaged in handling, or just fail.
    You can't have too many.

  21. How many will this filing cabinet hold?

  22. I carry no less than eight mags x 30’rounds. I have plenty more ready to load. The real question should be how many rounds? A video expert said no less than 4,000.

    ReplyDelete
  23. However many it takes to teach your 6 year old how to load them quickly. Sooner or later you’re gonna empty the flippin’ things & someone has to refill them. If you’re the shooter in a fight, that someone ain’t you.

  24. While I was in the army, the basic combat load was seven mags, one in the gun and six in ammo pouches. At 62, I doubt I’d last that many. Like my old platoon sergeant used to say back in the 70’s, all the bad motherfuckers are dead. Don’t bullshit yourself. Eod1sg Ret

    1. Plus the 300 rounds in boxes in your ruck, the 200 round drum for the SAW and a 100 round belt for the 240 (this was in the mid-90s). Don’t forget the two 60mm mortar rounds and the spare batteries for the PRC-77. No wonder I have back problems.

  25. as many will fit into your tactical vest or ammo vest. then double it as backup.
